APA rules on a jump shot

Didn't they recently change it to where you can use any other cue you have (say a break/jump cue) instead of your normal playing cue, just as long as you don't alter it in any way (i.e. pull the butt-end off)?

The rule now is:

Your allowed to use two cues during your match. Jumps are legal but the cue must remain in full length, it cannot be broken down. Jump cues are NOT allowed. Cue must be of a normal length.

They changed rules in this area as well. As stated above...you can switch cues to jump a ball...but cue must be full length & you can not add or take anything off the cue.
I've made several extremely light canvas tipped break cues for top area league players. Easier than you'd think to jump a ball with a full cue. Just made Allison one recently as well...hers weighs like 16oz, full cue, no j/b joint.;) Some may of seen her use it during IPT play...of course hers has an IPT legal tip too.

From the APA website frequently asked questions:
Are jump shots legal?
Jump shots are legal, when executed properly, but such shots must be attempted using your regular game cue. Those cues especially designed for jump shots MAY NOT be used in competition. Players are not allowed to break their cues down to attempt jump shots. Note: If the location has a sign that states no jump shots, then they are not allowed.

Your local league operator may have local by-laws in place that differ from this. As Kevin pointed out, our LO allows you to change cues in mid game provided you don't alter the cue. So I can go get my jump/break cue to execute a jump shot in mid game, as long as I use the full cue.
Room rules can over-ride this rule, so if the room doesn't allow jump shots, that is the rule that must be followed.
As someone else suggested, check with your league operator.

Same thing as switching cues ... not legal in the nationals, otherwise up to your LO.

Bingo!

As the new rule allows 2 cues both of standard length ! I believe this was rewritten to eliminate any confusion about break Cues being switched for shooting Cues (as it was explained to me when this came up) !

But as before, shortened specifically made JUMP CUES are stilled banned and illegal. :)

some rules are confusing , i was once shooting and for this tough shot i decided to use my stick that i break with and no it wasnt a jump break cue it was a normal cue after my shot i went to grab my playing cue and the other team sed no way now u have to finish ure match with the cue u swithced too, bummer cuz they were so condesending ...

I have no desire to play in the APA. Those mickey mouse rules are for the birds.

I'm starting to believe this as well... especially after I found out slop shots in 8-ball count.

OMG, this thread gives me deja-vu. Perhaps that's because WE JUST DISCUSSED THIS no more than a month or two ago.

In my opinion, I think the person posing the question should do what I would do if I had such a question. GO TO THE APA SITE AND LOOK IT UP!

Seriously, the best lesson here is to teach people how to teach themselves, folks.

APA is basically the lowest-end league as far as the average skill level player that it is geared toward. Nothing wrong with that - if it's not your cup of tea, then go for BCA/TAP/VNEA/etc.

I play both APA and VNEA. I play VNEA for the stronger competition, and I play APA because I've got a great team. I get different things out of both leagues.

And as far the "ask your league operator" - a fine idea. Folks should do that every time. They may have local rules that a bunch of internet yahoos like us don't know about. :D

League is often just a source of an evening out with friends for a lot of members. Often the level of play is very poor, even for the so called higher ranks. In this area at least, most quality players do not play league. There are of course exceptions to the rule...but in this area I can only name a very few league members who are truly high caliber players.
I myself have a team I'm on...some nights I enjoy it...some nights I wonder what I'm doing there. I just try to use it as a practice session, often you are on less than stellar equipment & fighting conditions more than your opponent. I definately prefer tournaments to league.
