Zpele, I was also at Big Shots 2 this weekend. What did you think of the place? I wish they had managed the spectator situation a bit better. It was too bad for the people that wanted to watch, because it was damn near impossible without getting right into the playing area around the tables. They probably could have arranged the layout better. The tables were in pretty poor shape as well, but at least were a similar model, cloth, balls, etc. to Vegas. Overall not too bad.

I won my bracket as well in 9 ball. I was on the last bracket. Some super strong players in there. I really played some great bar box 9 ball. It was overall a very enjoyable tournament, and would have been even if I lost. Very courteous and friendly opponents...just a nice experience overall. This will be my second time for 9 ball. You'll get it next year!

PS...can't slow roll on those tables!

I was not really a fan of the place if im being honest. There were too many tables for the space and not enough room for people to stand.

The tables were pretty horrible for a higher level tournament. Im not complaining about the slow cloth but when 3/4 of the tables are not level it gets frustrating especially when you are playing a shot that requires pinpoint speed.

Now I'm not complaining because I lost. I would have been just as critical if I'd won.

Tables

We had a table like that a couple of years ago. The guy I was playing banked one along the long rail about 3 inches from the the pocket. Somehow it found the side pocket  Also the return was getting stuck. Anyway, we won but both teams complained (I got smoked) . They had a crew of table mechanics out there like NASCAR and had the thing taken apart, leveled and the return fixed in about 20 minutes. That was pretty impressive.

Zpele, was this in Connecticut? And if I may ask, what skill level group were you in? A guy on my team won his bracket, and I'm not sure if he played as a four or a five.... He's a five now, but may have qualified as a four.

I'm pretty excited for him. He's really improved his game a bunch in the last year....

Had the exact opposite experience. The room that hosted our Regional had eight small Diamond Pro/Am's. Once I saw the tables, knew I had a very good chance of winning. My favorite tables. SBE, BCAPL Nationals, US Bar Box, Cue Club in Vegas. Only problem was there was another 7 on my board who plays on them regularly. Played him first match of course. He scratched with one ball left on the table at 4 - 0 him. He had broke in the eight and ran three racks to that point. Only rack I actually had a shot to run out and I did. To get to the finals, had to play him again. Ran the first four racks and stuck myself going to the eight with lots of open table available (stupid mistake). Played a safety game with him and he finally erred and I won 5 - 0. Sometimes not having the best equipment is a good thing for some players. Hard to run out on with all the strange table rolls!

Entry Numbers For APA Singles

Folks,

Some of you have been to the APA Singles before. How many players attend the event? Notice play actually begins Thursday afternoon. Saturday morning shows the semi-finals at 11:30 AM. How many entries can there actually be in each SL group even with the modified single elimination format? 150? 100? Anyone know? It took 14 hours to finish a 15 player board at Regionals.

14 hours? Jeez.. 8b was finished uhh, I want to say around 7 or something. Maybe it was later, but not by too much. We started around 11 or 12, I think. The place we were at has, uhh.. 8 diamond boxes and maybe another 7 valleys? Something like that.

The high s/l brackets are pretty big, especially in 8b. The first year I went as a 6, I lost, won 3 and then lost again.. finished 1 out of the money. The 1-3 9b bracket a couple of years ago, I think 1 win put you somewhere around $600 or something. There were somewhere around 25 or 30 people in it. Maybe there were around 90 or more in the 6/7 8b bracket.

Lyn, the guy from my team "only" had to get through five matches. Two on Saturday, three on Sunday. This was some place in Connecticut....I really need to get more info :-)

***edit*** he was in Vernon, Connecticut. New England qualifiers.

our regionals started at 10 am sat and the finals started at 3 pm sun. i really dont know how many players were there but i know there were 32 players in the 4/5 9 ball bracket alone. have no idea about the number for the rest of 9 ball or 8 ball for that matter. i know there were a shit load of players there.

btw we play at jobs in nashville and used 22 diamond 7's. there are 24 tables there but 2 were blocked off for traffic control.

no i did not win.

i won my 1st game 38-13. i was ahead 17- 11 my next game when i scratched on the break, my opponent runs out. he then has a break and run winning 31-17. he put up 20 points on me without me ever getting back to the table.

next game i am up 26-19 when i again scratch on the break, my opponent runs out. next rack he runs 5 balls and plays a safe. i make legal contact but nothing fall, he then runs out. next rack he runs to his required 38 points winning 38-26. he puts up 18 [ointson me and all i got to do was kick at 1 ball .

unfriggin believable! . i played great but those 2 scratches on the break killed me. those 2 guys turned into runout machines once they got bih from my scratched breaks.

props to them is all i can say and i will be back next year , hopefully.:D

Chris

Hey congrats I dont know if I met you but i was up there on Sat got put out in the 4th round. because I suck:( oh well there's always next time.

I just started APA about 3 months and missed a chance at a singles board on Saturday. Was a free entry but we had to go look at a dog
We didn't get the dog and I missed my chance. Will hopefully get a chance at teams. We are qualified for both 8 & 9 so far

hey..if you want to play in vegas..be on a roster..have enough
matches played..go an play in the mini tourneys..I've played there
in the team event..9ball..
spent alot of time in the practice room playing with
folks from all over..not gambling..just playing singles
scotch doubles..had a blast.I went over the next year and did
it again..If I had the money I'd do it again this year..
there are so many nice people playing there..an its fun.

Yeah, I had some locals mention that too. Luckily I didn't try to get qualified. I really don't have the vacation days right now and it's costs too much to take a day off. I have to keep enough for hopefully team, hunting, and some camping/off-roading

lost in the 6-7 bracket in the finals. scratched on the break with the 8 ball in the corner pocket, scratched on the 8 in another game, and then somehow i managed to put the 8 in early in the hill hill game.

I tried yesterday. 8 people showed up. I was the only 5. My first match was against the TD who was a 7. Lost 5-0. $20 well spent.

Folks,

Guess I did a poor job of describing the information I wanted to know. Has anyone been to the APA Singles event in Vegas? How many players are there on each SL bracket? Do they average 150? 100? Less? I'm curious as to how many players make the trek.

When I play BCAPL, the Open 8 ball singles in Vegas has about 1400 players on average. Roughly APA SL 5 & 6. The Advanced Division had about 120. Roughly APA 7. Masters around 90. APA does not have a skill level equal to this. Roughly the top 5% of APA 7's if not less.

Really don't know what to expect when I get there in April.

Thanks for the help.

Lyn
