APA "Travel Assistance"

Just trying to get a handle from different geographic parts of the county as to the current dollar total awarded to 8/9 ball teams heading to Vegas in August.

Maybe through a rational discussion with our local LOs, anchored with some comparison facts, we can get them to part with a few more offsetting bucks. Did I mentioned begging too?

For example here (upstate NY) three local territories are giving: $5,000, $5,000 (from $4,800), and $5,800.

When I went 2 years ago we got 5.000. Failed to qualify for 8 ball this past weekend. 9 ball ltc next week. Hope we can pull it off
 
The qualifiers here get a similar amount. I think it's likely dependent upon the "APA population" of the area as to the amount of payout for the LTC, however I recall reading some posts over the last few years that said there was no monetary prize in their area.
I'm not sure how it might work in other parts of the country, but in our area the Las Vegas qualifiers are also required top sign an agreement that their acceptance of the "travel assistance fund" (not prize money) is contingent upon their travel to Las Vegas and participation in The APA NTC for that particular year, if the team doesn't go the money must be paid back.
From what I've read in the past, for large part we, the players, are pretty much on our own financially and areas that pay out for their LTC should feel fortunate, some areas don't. One way we have found to "sort of" off-set the cost is to make plans to go regardless of whether or not you might qualify. So that way reservations can be made months ahead of time instead of weeks ahead and accommodations at some of the more cost effective casinos are available or early reservations are usually much cheaper the further ahead of time you can make them. In my own case I generally make 2 sets of reservations, one for the 8 ball event and one for the 9 ball event, they can always be cancelled and refunded usually up to 72 hours prior to the arrival date.
 
Our qualifying teams receive $2400 and that seams reasonable to me due to our location. We have to supplement that just a little bit for the flights. Our LO also reserves us three rooms at the hotel. I have never had a problem with this arrangement before and still think it is a good deal.
 
Our L.O. here in Atlanta isn't so generous. I understand that he doesn't HAVE TO give us anything for travel... But for 8 players its $4400.00 ($550.00 per person). From Atlanta to Vegas selecting the cheapest flight for the appropriate times is $400.00 round trip, plus a room at the host hotel is $648.00 for the required time... That comes to $1048 PER PERSON just for flight and room. Did I mention, that he is also the owner of the LARGEST APA league in the country???? APA has stated that when he retires or sells... They will be splitting up the league into 3 different ones so that its in the range of the average size leagues. So, my question... why can't he come out of pocket for more travel funds?

I send 5 teams from the Broward Area of South Florida. It costs me $6,000- $6,500 per team including air, hotel and tournament entry fee.

I CERTAINLY agree! It's a business, and he started doing it to make money. That's the American way. I have NO grudges or ill feelings about that. But on the other hand... Just keeping up with costs to send his players is not out of line.

I agree with you too. I was just being a smartass, which is my default setting.

Last year when we won states we received about $1200 total for our team of 8. This year we have a new league operator and we will be getting $4000 travel assistance for the team. Needless to say I am pretty happy with our new league operator.
 
This doesn't help in wanting comments concerning team play but I went in May
to play in the singles events. I'm in Middle Tennessee and my assistance was $345.
That didn't pay for one way of my trip. Now it was the same weekend as the Pac/Witherspoon fight so every airline in the country had the rates jacked up. But regardless, if the APA doesn't start at least covering the cost of the travel, then it's going to lose some participants.

If you play double jeopardy one night per week, at $7 per match, you're giving your LO about $670 a year. So most players will basically get a year and change worth of free pool as the offset if you win your way to Nationals.

As mentioned, the Seattle area LO gives the following:
- $200 per player travel assistance
- 4 hotel rooms for 6 nights
- Tournament entry fee paid

When we went in 2011 each person spent about $250 on airfare. A few people didn't want to stay at the Riv but there was no alternative provided by the LO.

Personally, i'd rather just get a wad of cash and let people work out what they want.

Trying to check in at the Riv was always a nightmare. I suspect it'll be reasonably the same at the WestGate. There are many more cost effective alternatives not far from the WestGate. I was reading the APA Facebook page a little bit ago, people were complaining about the price of the WestGate, I imagine as the event gets closer the price will only go up especially when they run out of APA rooms.
 
I've always considered travel assistance to be, just that, assistance. I don't think it's called "Take a Vacation Money". We lost in semi-finals so we won't be going, but I believe in Central Colorado the 3 teams that qualified each got $3k. Our masters qualifier is in 2 weeks and he gives away $6k total, $2k to each of the 3 qualifying teams.

From what my APA LO said, they are already sold out of everything. So, if your LO hasn't booked their block of rooms, they won't be able to get any. He had to book across the street at a different place (can't remember the name).

i just mentioned the amount in my previous post but want to state that the same applies here.

i just let my lo handle every thing for us. he asked how many rooms for how long.which hotel we wanted to stay at..how many plane tickets...took care of the tournament fee and handed me back 450.00 out of the 5,000.00 allotted.

our lo sends 2 - 8 ball teams....2- 9 ball teams...2 scotch doubles teams ..a masters team ....a jack and jill team... and a ladies team when there are enough teams playing. it seems like ladies only teams are not very popular around here.

i guess it all boils down to 2 things...how much revenue is generated in your area and how generous your lo is. i guess other league organizations face the same discrepancies...i recall a poster stating his 8 man bcapl team only got 800.00 for the entire team which comes to just 100.00 a player. that don;t cover gettin outa town much less rooms .
 
9 Ball

I was the captain of a 9 Ball team that went last year and we got $5600 divided by 8 players so $700 a piece. It basically covers the flight and hotel from Rhode Island to Vegas which is around $750 for the week.
 
Delaware was $5500 for 8 ball and $4400 for 9 ball this year. We qualified 4 teams in 8 and 3 in 9. State tournament also paid out so if my 8 ball team had qualified we would have gotten an extra $1500 - $2500 depending on where we placed. We came up 1 round short in both 8 and 9 and got paid out $500 for each.
