APA "Travel Assistance"

Back in 2008 in East Tennessee I'm not sure what the total $ value was or how many teams were in the league but the winning teams of three sixteen person brackets in our "city tournament" got the air fare and hotel rooms for free as well as a hundred or two dollars back upon arrival. To my knowledge it has always been that way.

Didn't the APA used to offer all expense paid trip?

I've always considered travel assistance to be, just that, assistance. I don't think it's called "Take a Vacation Money". We lost in semi-finals so we won't be going, but I believe in Central Colorado the 3 teams that qualified each got $3k. Our masters qualifier is in 2 weeks and he gives away $6k total, $2k to each of the 3 qualifying teams.

Wow I'm starting to really appreciate the LO here. Teams going to Vegas get $8,000 here.

"If you play double jeopardy one night per week, at $7 per match, you're giving your LO about $670 a year. So most players will basically get a year and change worth of free pool as the offset if you win your way to Nationals."

Eileon,
You are not paying your LO the $7 per week. They do not receive that entire payment. I believe that they receive less than half of it. I could be wrong and I know there are a couple of LO's on here that might be able to shine some light on that.

I don't think The APA ever advertised that it was all expenses paid, however, I know that some Bar and room owners or their employees sold it as that, I suspect that some LO's or division managers, league coordinators, etc... also sold it as that.
To be fair, some room or bar owners were pretty generous when they had a team qualify for the NTC. Years ago the room owner where we played would match the league contribution and I know some other APA Houses did similar types of things in place to help finance the team's travel, but that was years ago. The last few times we qualified I felt more than fortunate that we were able to squeeze some t-shirts out of our bar owners. That's why now we look for any way to offset the cost of the trip that we can find. The most effective way that I have found personally is to plan to go for 2016 starting now and generally making as many arrangements as you can beginning in December or January. Hotels, cars, flights are all much cheaper earlier in the year with the best prices usually coming in around March. Refunds and / or cancellations are fairly easy to take care of if need be. It just makes all this stuff much easier and you never know if you can count extra money coming from somewhere else.

That's their business what their franchise fees are. When I cut that check every week for $70 to the LO, that's her money IMHO.

My billing rate is $235 an hour. If 100% of my time was billable then i'd be a wealthy man! But to my clients, i'm still making $235 of their dollars per hour.

You can view it any way you like as long as you understand the truth is different.

When I played APA in Bergen County NJ, it was $11 per match, or $22 if you played both 8-ball and 9-ball.

Break down was $35 for green fees (2 9' tables for the night), $35 for 8-ball and $40 for 9-ball in an envelope to the league operator. As co-captain I had to make sure we come up with $110 each night.

From the teams that went to Las Vegas, I heard travel assistance was around $2-2,500.

Its interesting how most of the league operators hand over specific amounts of money to the teams. Is it within the teams right to pocket the $ and not go?

In South Florida the two league operators (one is Gene who already posted in this thread) both dont tell the teams what the cost is, they just buy the flights, hotel and entry into the event. So for South Florida the APA folks view a cities win as being a vegas vacation where the major expenses are paid.

We have a new LO here, but, the one before wouldn't give the players the cash until they were in Vegas.

I Atlanta.... the way our LO does it is a specific amount of money allotted to the team / per person IF we go. If we don't go or fail to provide PROOF of flights, etc... we don't get the money. It is approx. $550 PER PERSON. The cost of flight and sharing a room with another (which nobody likes to do) is approx. $750.00 per person. NOT including the added cost of higher prices for food, extra expenses associated with traveling, etc...

In our league we don't get the money if we don't go. You have to sign a legal form that you are going, and you must show your bookings and flight itinerary, then you receive the money.

Same here. We, as a team, sign an agreement with the LO that our team will travel to and participate in the NTC for that particular year. If we don't go the money has to be returned. Our LO got burned a few years ago and that was what spawned the birth of that formal agreement between the LO and the qualifying teams. As well, ours isn't an allotment per player, it's per team. Our form isn't that detailed, we don't have to show proof of stuff, but it's the same idea.

It's travel assistance, not travel included. Different LO's offer different packages - at last year's tournament, I spoke with people whose LO's had actually booked and paid their airfare/hotel, who'd given them as much as $8000 (which was sufficient to cover hotel, air, and some spending money), or a pittance against actual costs. At the worst, it's still a discounted cost to take a spectacular trip.

Our L.O. here in Atlanta isn't so generous. I understand that he doesn't HAVE TO give us anything for travel... But for 8 players its $4400.00 ($550.00 per person). From Atlanta to Vegas selecting the cheapest flight for the appropriate times is $400.00 round trip, plus a room at the host hotel is $648.00 for the required time... That comes to $1048 PER PERSON just for flight and room.

Sure, $1048 per person if everyone has to have their own private room. Putting 2 people / room brings it down considerably. Staying offsite (Circus Circus is dirt cheap, and not a terribly far walk as Vegas goes) can bring it down considerably farther.

APA leaves the exact dollar amount and restrictions to each LO. Depends on total team count of that APA area, amount of weekly fees paid by each team (varies across the country), history of the league, distance from Las Vegas, etc. It's up to the LO, but whatever is decided it has to be approved by St Louis. My weekly fee is $6 per player, but some areas are set at $7-9 per player. Obviously that would generate more money into the player return fund. So when you guys start comparing LO pay outs it rapidly gets to an "apples and oranges" comparison if you do not include the weekly match fee in your discussion.

In my area I pay the $250 registration fee per team and provide $4800 to my four teams that go. That amounts to $5050 per team and $600 per player, after accounting for the registration fee. And it is not prize money, it's travel assistance. Some teams report back that after buying plane tickets and hotel reservations they have money left over for airport parking, rental cars, etc. Some teams blow it all on travel and the nicest hotel they can find. I also pay $800 per team to the SECOND place teams and $400 to each THIRD place team. And let's remember all teams get last place money as soon as they check in. I think it's around $300-375 per team, not sure of exact amount.

NOTE ABOUT ABOVE POST - Atlanta area is big, but 3-4 areas are bigger.

In our area, Northwest Louisiana, 4 teams go to vegas in both 8 and 9. With 1st getting 10000, 2nd 9000 3rd 8000, and 4th getting 7000. These amounts are for both lodging and travel expenses.
