APA Unmarked Pocket Cost my Rackess, then the Match

I don't know about other places but around here we can't use a piece of chalk to mark the pocket, it must be something else. I use my phone.

This poker chip would be perfect:

A lot of APA areas are similar to that. No Chalk, no money, etc.... but all are permissible
by APA standards, like chalk is OK - but not recommended.
The APA allows local rules, but when those teams advance to Las Vegas they have to
remember that their local rules are no longer rules.
I can't tell you how many times I have heard "That's not what we do at home..."
you have to remind them that this isn't home.
When you think about it you have to ask why not? I mean really, what's a marker for?
To show where you intend to make the 8 ball, why should it matter what you use to
illustrate that, I've used chalk, a shoe, mustard, ketchup, old tissue, a person, money,
salt or pepper shaker, what ever is handy.
Just play like gentlemen, if everyone knows where the 8 ball is going, especially during
regular weekly play, let it go

APA national changed the rule; chalk is allowed now, but not recommended.

Yeah. You need to make sure that your opponent knows that you are using the chalk as a marker. If its in a pocket holder or something, and you take it out of your pocket (or off your belt) that's pretty obvious. If its the chalk from the table, well....it could lead to ambiguity.

Seriously. Just use your phone or something simple and stick it on the table. I have an APA coin that I use. Have something simple with your gear, or a quarter. So many people do so many things that only add complication to what should be pretty simple.

There are a lot of indignities to suffer in APA, but hearing teams yell "MARK THE POCKET" fifteen or twenty times per night because of the self-righteous dweebs who would take a "win" when their opponent fails to do so is pretty high up on the list.

my pocket marker...always gets a laugh.

Didn't mark my pocket for the 8 tonight during my match game for a rackless. Opponent still had 6 or 7 balls on table...

For those unfamiliar with APA, it goes down as a scratch on the 8 because it wasn't marked. … There's zero question about where I was intending to put it, but thems the rules.

Opponent only needed two games to win the match. Ahead again in the next game, I proceeded to get fancy and knocked in the 8 early (E8). Game over. From rackless to losing the match because I didn't mark my pocket.

Yes a dumbass move. Let the criticism rain down. I'm still new to this.

That's ok bro. You will get a participation award at the end of the year. Happy millennials age!

I think you meant "and I have zero doubt that he's telling the truth?" Meaning, you don't doubt that he's telling the truth, the OP being "he?"

Right. I fixed it. I had just gotten up out of bed and was still a bit foggy in the head.

Not that I have a mastery of the English language anyway.

O.K., I'm starting to understand this:

"self-righteous dweebs who would take a "win" when their opponent fails to (mark the pocket)" = someone who plays by the rules.

Five years ago I probably would have taken a win like this. Today, I wouldn’t dream of it.

Had something similar happen...I was playing a very good shooter I was up 4 games to 3 with a dead bank into the corner to win. Hit the shot, as the ball is on the way, I realize I didn't mark the pocket. I stammered BANK IN THE CORNER! as it fell in. To his credit, my opponent was not going to take the win, but his captain made him, as it was a close overall match.

Hill-hill the guy knocks the 8 ball in on the break...from sinking the winning 8 ball to losing the match in about 10 seconds...I feel your pain!

That is not the the way I would want to win, i doubt I would take a win like that. If I was that concerned about my opponent marking the pocket I would warn him that he had forgotten to mark his pocket for future games.

Our BCA league is that you only need to call shots that are not obvious, I still call every 8 ball and any combo, carom, bank, etc even if obvious. The trap that can be fallen into can easily happen on caroms or combos, I like my opponent to know which ball I intend to pocket and I prefer them to call those same shots as sometimes the ball you would not expect to fall in goes in the hole.

I'm sure all those "just the rules" folks have never jaywalked or rolled through a stop sign, and if they do, they voluntarily send in their fees to the local government. Not.

Sorry to be a nay sayer but, in the APA, there are NO DEAD BANKS.

Need to mark pockets is due to a-holes and bar bangers that love to argue rules they don't know playing in leagues. Pick a different league. I don't think BCA or USAPL has any rules about marking pockets and it's all gentleman called shot, if it's straight in, no need to point at every pocket you are shooting at. In many of my matches, even a one rail bank is still an "obvious" shot since it's pretty clear where the ball was intended to go.

Same here.

And to the OP, lesson learned but real shitty of your opponent to take the game if it was an obvious shot. Probably all proud of themselves that they won too

I have no idea what that means, how that can be. Do you mean there are no bank shots that are not necessary to call?

(I thought a dead bank was a shot where if you hit the OB squarely with the CB, it would go off a rail and straight into a pocket, i.e., no cut necessary.)
