just opened AZB and theres a pic of appleton with his cue extended. so thats mika, svb and him now using the javelin style cue, earl is changing the game, i see cues increasingly being made with extensions. earl should have patented the idea.

Is Earl using an extension? I thought he just had a long cue?

Ideas are not patentable in any case

If I'm not mistaken, he gave up tennis 3 years ago. So he took a hacksaw to the handle of his Prince racquet and attached it to his butt with chewing gum, bailing wire and 100 feet of gooey gauze. If that's not "patent-able" then I'm surely SOL with my new line of laser guided velcro ear weights. :(

The last couple of years there several challenge matches on ten foot tables. I belive Earl started using the longer cue instead of to use an extension or a bridge..
Snookers players tend to master the bridge because of the bigger tables.

He is using a screw in butt extension rather than the balance right joint extension. Predator sells them and they are extremely similar to the Mezz extensions. I've been using my 6" extension on my Summit for a few months now, it's worth it!

A screw in butt extension is much better than the joint extension, IMO.

This is brought on by the 10 foot challenge. I think alot of players just found it easier to keep the extension on all the time, as it offers benefits on 9 foot tables too.
personally i play with a 30" shaft, but i would love to play with a permanent 3" extension too.

Balance Rite

Mika and Jason Shaw are using the joint to shaft Balance Rite Extension (I believe John Schmidt may be also). Earl I am not sure about, Shane and Darren are using extensions on the butt (Shane's is a stock Cuetec).

IIRC, Earl's cue can be extended to 70 inches and he has 3 different sized butt extensions.

All that is being done is changing the balance point of the cue.

The bridge hand distance to the cue ball seems to be the same with a 90 degree angle on the elbow
unless one is playing an out of normal reach shot.

The same effect can be achieved with a heavier butt.

Does this mean there is something wrong with the balance point on traditional pool cues?

You are thinking way too much into it.

The extension is just left on the cue, rather than taking it on and off constantly.

For me personally balance point and weight is very important on a cue.

I would suggest that shots requiring an extension are very few and would not alone
justify changing the dynamics of your cue.

Well- i'd say you are correct-either that or the balance point with the extensions-especially butt extensions makes them now 'wrong'

Yes, adding an extension adds weight and changes the balance point, but you are still thinking too much into it. The reason you see Shane with the extension on full time, is because he said "i got use to it, so I just leave it on"

I first saw Karen Corr use an extension years ago. I talked to Pat Diveney a few weeks ago and he is going to make an 8" extension for me that will screw into the butt of my cue, through the bumper. The cue he made me is 61" so that will give me lots of reach with a long bridge.

I tossed out a comment about Charles Petersen and where he thought a cue should be gripped.
