You can search AZ, others have posted similar pictures. So it isn't the first time. Wonder what is Aramith's warranty on these. The grey layer is probably magnetic.
 
My information is 10th hand, from the forums, so you know its absolutely true;) ....

The magnetic cue balls for bar tables start life as a regular numbered ball. They are then made smaller in diameter, to allow room for the magnetic layer, and then the white layer on top of that.
 
I think if I searched around hard enough I could find the near dozen of pictures I've seen like this. Iusedtoberich is spot-on. As poor of quality the outer shell is, these are the best magnetic cue balls you can find. The outer shell is quite soft. When the ball flies off the table it almost always comes back with some scratches and scuffs.
