Are Pool balls the answer

With the BCA banning Phenolics and players looking for a tip that is better than leather.

Is recycling old pool balls and using them of tip/ferrule combinations the answer?

Positives

1. Everyone thinking green, recycling old balls won't fill up land fills

2. No one could argue one pool ball will damage another

3. There must be an abundance of damaged balls since phenolics are so destructive?

4. Cuemakers get alot of new tip work

Negatives

1. Cost players money to change a tip they've used for 15 years with no problems

2. Slows the advancement of improving cues and the game

I think investing in the equipment to recycle would be a hard sell. Besides, I really doubt the ball makers care what the cuemakers do.
 
I saw some cue joints that were made out of pool balls once. I can't find the site right now, but it was a pretty intense process. He was basically getting 3 joints from one ball, but there was a lot of slicing/cutting/turning work to get it done.
 
I rolled and shaped my phenolic tip into a blow dart and sent it to the Kabuki tribe in Belize. First shot went right through a monkey. They mailed me a letter, (carved into bamboo) to add red phosphorus to the other end so that they can see where the tip ends up after impact.

I think this is wonderful for tribes such as this!.
 
I forgot to add, I give the "worn" out balls to the dorks (no offense) at the renaissance faires to shoot at each other with their slings and catapults. Maybe I should start making phenolic hats for them so they don't get hurt.

Funny thing 1 week after word the BCA was banning phenolics.
I recieved a box of Bamboo tips from Fed EX from Belize. Included was 3 free monkey skin wraps newest thing out for cues.
 
The difference between the phenolic Pool Ball & the Phenolic Tip is generally this (the tip has fiber reinforcement (like re-bar in concrete).

Alot of the reinforcement is contructed of spider web silk. A very strong material. I just feel bad for the people of Belize that must farm this extremely fine product and wrap it on spools. :wink:

Preposteous!

One can get leather tips that are very (very) hard, approaching 99 on the durrometer; or about XXX-hard to XXXX-hard.

This is hard enough fro the break cue and plenty hard for the jump cue.

In addition this is still significantly less hard than the ball materials themselves, and thus the balls themselves won't be taking such a beeting.

On the other hand: for those that want to preserve (their) Phenolic tips, I have a suggestion:: Anyone who wants to use a cue with a phenolic tip (or similar hardness) simply has to donate a brand new cue ball (in package) to the match at hand--and durring this match they may use their super hard, damage creating, phenolic tip.
 
I saw in a thread on here that a member used his phenolic tip as a ferrule and put a thin but very hard leather tip on it to help control his jumping but it took nothing noticeable off of his break.
