"Art Shot" of Billy Dan Rogers at an old Red's Tournament

In working through the 507 negatives and 50 slides sent to me by Mike Haines, I occasionally come across an image that seems to lend itself to an "arty" treatment. Here's the original image; my next post has the "arty" treatment. BTW, I must credit Mike Haines for his invaluable advice on transforming the image.

Hey, Tom, you got the 8 to 6 part right, but you're giving, not taking!!!:D

BTW, I just using Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 (a gift from Mr. Haines). It's only about $80.

You need to flip him again because I think he was left handed.

You are exactly correct! Thanks!

Man, I hate screwing that up. With negatives, it's easy to see which side to place toward the glass plate on the scanner. But with slides, I sometimes have trouble seeing which side to place down. I just checked another shot of Billy Dan that I scanned from a negative, and you are correct, he shoots left-handed. When I looked at the sheet of 17 slides from the Red's tournament, exactly ONE of them is reversed. You guessed it. Thanks for pointing this out.:)

Does he look better this way?

And BTW, you make some nice looking cues!

I was just being a pricccccccccccckkkk because thats what I do best. Thanks for taking it good and I thought it was a shot that he couldnt reach left handed. I lived in Houston for a while and he was an excellent 1-Pocket player and he was always a stand up man.

Bill,
WHAT me give up WEIGHT?... you must be trying some of that special Kentucky blend... :D

I'm running a $5000 added One Pocket tournament Jun 13th-15th then a $10,000 added 9Ball event for Hard Times Summer Jamboree. Why don't you just hop out here and take some pics of the West Coast One Pocket and 9 Ball legends?

As I recall, you gave up the weight the last time we played

I checked out your pics - nice job! You don't look a day older! As for coming out there to photographs your tournaments, you know I'd love to, and would be willing to do so for just expenses plus a few bucks :) , but my lovely wife and I are going to Colorado on June 17, so it just won't work.

First I thought you just changed the color. After looking a little longer I noticed the chalk and chair had disappeared aswell. Probably 20 other thing I didn´t catch. Very nice picture and good editing.

You made my morning!

Thanks for your perceptive comments, Double-Dave, you made my morning! You might notice that there were actually three other people that could be seen, though faintly, in the original shot. If I jacked up the brightness, you would see them easily. In fact, let me just show you in the image below (showing him correctly as a left-handed shooter). There were lots of things taken out of the original, including the overhead lights. Oh, and the pool table in the background had to be moved when one of the people got axed.

Latest version of the shot

You probably won't see much change here, but in this version, stuff in the background has been further reduced. Thanks for looking!

Hey, you just pointed out an error in the image that I needed to fix. When I read your post, I figured that you might have been an old friend of his and just wanted to be sure he was shown accurately as a lefty.

Tom, if you are just going to do normal photo editing, there is no reason to get the full version of Photoshop. As Bill has indicated, Photoshop Elements will do everything you need, and then some, for a lot less money.

I have been told that Elements has approximately 80% of what is in the full version of Photoshop.

I had an older version of Elements and switched to the full version, when Adobe offered a big discount. I will probably never use most of the stuff on the full version and may switch back to Elements in the future.
JMHO.

Thanks Rich and Bill for the info on the Photoshop Elements, I will check it out.

Rich, did you get a chance to visit the tournament pictures on http://www.imagestation.com/album/pictures.html?id=2119515667

Tom, I and a few other guys from New Orleans have always wanted an excuse to play in a tournament at Hard Times and we like one pocket but don't like to take off all of the weekdays for a three day tournament. Let me know if you ever move the one pocket tournament to a weekend.
Thanks

Billy Dan Rogers

I've been going through old pool magazines and stumbled on a short article in the July '85 National Billiard News about Billy Dan. Aparently he was diagnosed at that time with terminal cancer. He was described as "one of the best one pocket players in the pool industry", and "a real gentleman, who never has an unkind word for any person." It goes on to say that Richard Black donated a cue for a fund-raiser raffle.

Did he die young, or did he pull though??

I know he died years ago, but I don't know the year. I would appreciate it if you would send me a copy of the article you mention. Maybe you could scan it and email me the scan as an attachment? Thanks!
