This question may seem a little foolish but I am haveing a tough time trying to figure something out. When I was younger around the age of 12 i used to go to a pool hall in my city. The hall consisted of about 10 billiard tables. The question i have is does anyone know of a game that is played on a billiard table with little figurines? I remeber that you would have to knock into small figurines, almost like little pins and knock them over after making a legal hit. It has been so long since I have played this game but I remeber that I enjoyed the game. if anyone could help me out it would be appreciated. I have searched online and have found no info. Thanks in advance

Probably pin billiards, played with five pins on the table. It's currently played in Italy, Argentina, and maybe Denmark. One set of rules is in the 1914 rule book, which is available for free on the website listed in my signature. I believe that Robert Byrne discussed this game in one of his books. It was the game featured in the Italian movie "Pool Hustlers."

Another possibility is a game called skittles, but I think that's usually played on what we would call a snooker table.

Is it?

I don't know how to call this kind of game. In my country, sometime people still play it. There are some figurines in the table, each figurine has a number of points, and you will get these point when you knock them over after making a legal hit. There are some more bigger figurine behind some figurine that has high point and you will be "die" when hit hit. Each people has a different number that they get from a box and only him know it. Other players can guess and pretend him to win (you win when you get exacty the point that you get at begin of the game). When your points is greater than the point you much reach to win, you will...go out and watch the remain players. People usually play this game for money, the winner take all.
I explain so much but I still wonder if this is the game theoneandonly mention :p

Yes, it sounds like it's probably this game as opposed to pin billiards that the OP was referring to. A description of pin billiards is in Byrne's Wonderful World of Billiards.

Which countries are the figurine-style played in? Does the game have an English name?

I don't care if it is or not. You are describing what I believe would be a fun game to learn. Please email me at CrossSidelarry@aol.com I would love to learn the game you describe.

Best Regards

Hello, Friends.
I’m Italian, I live in Rome and my name is Franco. I happened to notice you are talking about a billiard game once played by theoneandonly , that Bob Jewett guessed to be the game that in Italy is called “italiana” ( when played with 5 little pins in the middle of the table ) or “goriziana” ( when played with 9 pins ).
You can guess how much Italian this game is from its name, but it is now played in many European Countries ( besides some South American ones ); it is played on the same tables used for carom ( internal size of 284 x 142 centimetres ).
Though many sites exists in Italy which deal with various techniques for playing it, I only know one site where you can find something written in English ( and Dutch ); this site name is http://bcs76.free.fr/cadre0.htm ( site of the Billiard Club of a French town called Sotteville ).
You can find there also a very good description of THE DIAMOND SYSTEM.
I am not sure this game is the one that theoneandonly sort of remembers, but if any one of you is interested in “italiana” game, here I am, though I don’t usually play it, as I very much prefer 3-cushion carom : within the Italian Federation of Billiard ( namely “ FIBiS “= “Federazione Italiana del Biliardo Sportivo “ ), I am in charge of the Carom Section for the Central Italy .
Ciao
Franco
