"Ask the Cuemaker?"

ive said a number of time the search feature is a little flawed. you can put words like "tip" or "tad" and get results

i have to disagree. most og the "gods" were indeed spoonfed info. most of the "gods" are "gods" because of where the came from and who they worked under. ie spain, gb, gus, harvey martin ect. not that they are not great artists but do u think burt let joel just run around his shop with no training or supervision. i dont think so. times do change. some change with times some dont. i think tad still used laquer finish.

i would love just a cuemaker forum but who is the one to choose whos in and whos out? there are some very very good repair men that dont make their own cues. then there are guys that just can do tips and ferrules and thats all. the system would most deff be very very flawed

yes

I've been thinking about some of the things that cause problems in this forum. It would be nice if the AZ management would look close at these ideas and take appropriate action.

I am basing this on the premise that "Ask the Cuemaker" was started with the idea that information would be exchanged between cuemakers and non-cuemakers who had questions would have a place to get correct answers.

It was NOT started to be self serving for any poster. it was not started to blow your own hornor just to post things to see your name in print.

It was not intended to be a place to sell things (there is already a place for that). It would be ok to point someone in the right direction for supplies or equipment.

It was not intended to be a place to show finished work (there is already a place for that also).

It was not intended to be a place to attack any other cuemaker or supplier for alleged wrongs. These matters should be addressed between the parties involved or in civil court. It is impossible for one to adequately defend himself against alleged wrongs in a forum like this especially with anomous posters. Nobody is under oath, lies bounce back and forth and nobody ever finds out the whole truth.

Things that need to be corrected:

Anomous posters. Unless the poster is willing to show the name of his business, his name, address and phone number he should not be allowed to reply to any question. The reason for this is that an anonomous poster can ruin another's reputation with impunity. The reader should know the qualifications of those who are providing information and how to contact them if need be.

Any post that is not a legatimate question about cuemaking should be removed.

Those responding to questions must be a reputable cuemaker, in business, licensed in his state. Amatours, wantabees, part-timers and repair persons should not be allowed to reply.

No information should be allowed concerning the price of cuemaking supplies.

There should be a moderator whose only job would be to delete any post that is not conducive to good cuemaking or good for the billiards industry.

The reason I am posting this is that I don't have a problem with a one on one relationship with other cuemakers. We know each other and have cuemaker's respect for each other. We agree to disagree at times because there are many roads to the same destination. Something happens to some of us when we get on this forum (and I am guilty also). Some of us (myself included) say things that are not very nice or respectful of others. We don't go to a show and say simething to the effect that my cues are better than yours. Your cues are cheap. Your cues are too expensive. Your cues hit like crap. We pretty much try to get along and help one another. Ocassionally someone will come along and try to move ahead by criticizing another cuemaker's work but these people fade away never to be heard from again.

I would appreciate it if you would respond professionally and lets try to make this forum a better place for all of us.

Good Cuemaking,
Could not agree more Arnie, That's the way I, intended it to be from the get go.....O-WELL.....

This section of the forum was the first one that I found during a google search back awhile ago. It has been the spark to get me going on the path I am on now. I had been wanting to get into cuemaking for awhile, but was hesitant to go further after doing only tips and simple repairs for about 10 yrs. The great cuemakers and repairmen of this forum have given me the drive and the help to go further in the last 1-1/2 yrs then I would have gone by myself. I will always be thankful and in debt to all that have helped me either thru the posts or pm's. I am no means an expert, only a beginner, but do hope to reach higher levels in the future.
That being said, to make this section a 'members only' would exclude people like me that have a passion for this, are starting off, and don't own a dedicated business, but only do this as a hobby/part-time thing, as we have regular jobs. I myself have plans for the future but at this time can't make that kind of move. I admit that I am quilty for having said things here sometimes that maybe I shouldn't have, but we're all guilty of that from time to time. Usually, I do that when I see/read someone bashing someone or group of people, for either their plesasure or just to further their own business, or agenda, which has been on the rise not only in this section but on the whole site. When my BS meter goes off the scale, I have a hard time restraining myself from responding. I do agree with all the above mentioned complaints, and have tried not contribute to them, not on purpose anyways.
I really hope that this section returns back to normal without imposing the 'professional makers only' restriction as I think this will only hurt the people like myself, and others that may come after me. JMO
Again thanks to all the people that have helped me, and the others like me.:thumbup2: you guys are great.

I agree with Dave. I found this by accident one day and have gotten a lot of valuable information here. I haven't asked a ton of questions, but have used search quite frequently. I still do. If this wasn't available to me when I started out, I may still be struggling with a lot more than I am.

As for the people that don't want all the secrets out there, it's a bit late. They are out there. You can buy books, videos and equipment ready to go out of the box. I though of trying cue making many years ago, but the lack of information kept me away. It doesn't matter what's out there. It's up to the individual to use it. There's still no doubt, more will fail or give up than succeed, so what are people afraid of?

I too have used the search function, but it is one of the more difficult ones to get the results one needs. Most of the time, it eliminates most of my keywords so I get nowhere fast:confused:

Personally I think the search feature is lacking on this forum and is one of the reasons you see the same questions over and over. Or maybe I just suck at using it.....

Use google adding site:azbilliards.com to your list of search terms.
Unlike cuemaking, no skill required.
