Asking for advise on drum sanders.

I've decided to take the plunge on a new drum sander.
What are your thoughts, fellow all knowledgeable AZ'ers?
I'm looking for something that has not made you want to throw it
out in the street. A minimum thickness for inlay slabs and less
is preferred.
So far I'm leaning towards the Grizzly baby drum sander.
I got great advice on my band saw from here and am hoping that
I will get the same treatment again.

Yeah, I have the small perfomaxx. It sands the hell out of stuff and can be used as weight training equipment too.
 
I have the Grizzly G0716 0" drum sander and for under $500 (including freight) it is a hell of a deal. http://www.grizzly.com/products/10-Drum-Sander/G0716
Shop Fox has a similar unit but is more $$$ The adjustments are well detailed in the manual and It is only about .001-.002 " difference from side to side on a 9" test board. You won't get any brand that will do 1/8" slabs by themselves, Most only go to 1/4", but just make a 'sled' out of some MDF, with a small lp on it to hold the slab onto it and then run it thru the sander.You WILL NEED dust collection, otherwise it will get foggy really quickly in your shop. Jet or Performax?

I know they are basically the same but the earlier Performax had some tracking issues and I just came across this site

It appears to have another issue as well but maybe they have figured out how to catch that flaw before leaving the factory.
I am sold on this model if the right price comes around.
It has a better min thickness capability spec

i did have a tracking issue with my performax
was fine for months & months
all of a sudden one day it decided to wander off
it snagged the drive belt and ripped about 2" off of it
now i have an 8" wide drive belt
tracking issue solved, :thumbup:
 
I found one

I put the word out and found a Performax 10-20 in Albuquerque with about 2 hrs of use for 550.00. I think I'll bribe a friend to pack it up and bring it down. The picture does look like new and they said no tracking issue.....
We all know that story.
Brent, how thin have you pushed yours without a sled?

fyi> when it comes time to replace sanding belts,
you can save some bucks with these

instead of the pre-cut 120 Grit Sandpaper, 4-Wraps (For Model 10-20) @ $49.39 EA

klingspor sells it in (i think it's 60) foot rolls , been a while
keep one of the originals to use as a pattern
if memory serves me, i got 11 out of the klingspor roll for about $40
i just bought the grizzly rolls , so not sure about them yet
should be able to get 4 out of a 22ft. roll for $14
it takes 5ft. for the 10-20

i USE the hell out my drum sander
i've gone thru 3 belts in 1 day :yikes:
when i bought mine from rockler,
they told me that i should only go a 1/4 turn at a time, which is about 3/1000ths
screw that :grin:. i hog the hell out it until i get close to desired thickness,
then i start the babycuts
