Asking For Designs/Prices From Cuemakers

I am ready to have my first cue built. I don't know how to go about asking cuemakers for designs, prices, availability, etc. I have an idea of what I want and it's pretty simple, but I want to give the craftsmen the freedom to do what he does. So what's the best way to get this info from Cuemakers without 'wasting their time'?

Post something public on here and let people respond? Google "cuemakers" and start making calls? (feel like I'm leaning towards wasting time if I go down that road) Are there any sites or anything that I should know for this type of thing?

Sorry for sounding like a neophyte but I am and this cue is going to be something near and dear to me so I want to make sure it's what I want. At the same time I want to respect the cuemaker's time.
 
Find some cuemakers that make cues similar to the kind of cue you want. Then out of those makers, pick a few that could make the cue within your budget. If you can, try and find examples of cues from that group to see if you like how they play/feel and if you like the craftsmanship. Hopefully you have narrowed it down to 2 or 3 at the most by then. Send an email or call those 2 or 3 and talk with them about what you are interested in. After a few emails or chatting with them (it won't take very long, just keep the discussion pertinent) about the cue and your expectations, you will know who to place the order with.
 
Thanks for the response. I don't know/come across many people that play with custom cues in my area. Lots of production cues+aftermarket shafts.

I really want something that's my own. And I prefer to support people and not companies if I can. I was hoping having the experience of playing with many different production cues would be enough to narrow down playability. But then I guess I'm trusting the cuemakers to know what I'm talking about.

You are just up the road from Doug Patrick in O'lathe. Go see him and he can make you a fine cue. It is always nice to work with a local cuemaker if possible. You can pick your wood and inlay design out in person.

Since your in Mo....Doug would do you right, also Josh Treadway in St Louis makes a fine cue.
