At what point do you think it's adventagious to learn to jump?

That's like asking when you should learn to turn left when driving. It's all part of the toolkit you need to become a complete player. ......
I would say its like using a lob shot in tennis, yes you can sometimes win without it, but there are times when its the only logical shot.......

The guys on my league team are around 500-550 Fargo and they all use jump shots. I don't have a Fargo rate but play about the same speed. I've never spent my time learning to jump. I think I'm better off spending my time on better ball pocketing and position play. What do you think?
As soon as you can. It's a skill that is part of the game.

It is really simple, the jump shot is allowed and is part of the game. Jumping with full length cue and with a jump cue are skills. So when you deny yourself a skill while others have it you put yourself at a disadvantage. Let's say you choose to forgo jumping and focus more on other aspects and you do end up being a better pocketer than your friends. Ok so you are now pocketing at say a 580 speed and you meet other 580s who also know how to jump and how to play safe against the jump. When shots come up where jumping is an option or might be the best choice you won't have that option and they will. So really all you can hope to do is play tight safeties to try and nullify their jumping ability. But the odds are that you will not be able to do this as much as you attempt to. Meanwhile an opponent who does know how to jump can push to a jump shot, play safeties knowing that you will always kick and have a much wider range of shots available to them than you do.

there really is not a need to choose which aspect of your game to improve. You can do both daily.

So recommend a good jump cue. Not a piece of junk because it's cheap, something middle of the road price wise.

Pocketing and position is very important but its not always up to you where the cue ball is positioned, someone's safety game can and will win many games, especially in 9 ball where a 3 foul rule may be in place.

I'm no master at jumping but if I can reach it and have the room to get over a ball I will atleast hit my object ball probably 95% of the time and occasionally make it, makes a big difference just getting a hit vrs giving up a ball in hand.

I have demo'd one of the Jacoby offerings... Can't remember which one. Reacted extremely well. So much so that I forced myself to put it down. I don't have the funds to buy a jumper and didn't want to build up a dislike for what I currently use...lol
This is the exact reason I do not feel the need to try anything else. Just leads to the unnecessary spending or more $$$$. :)

Well I should measure my praise for the Jacoby jumper with the fact that my current jumper is designed for breaking primarily. Not the performance of a dedicated jumper by any stretch.

No measured praise necessary, the Jacoby is pretty damn good.

At what point do you think it's adventagious to learn to jump? (advantageous)

After you need it the 1st time.
That first need came 50 some years after starting to play (bumper) pool.

In all reality, near 100% of the time you can kick and masse with a little more precision than a jump shot.
I've kicked & massed a whole lot more than my 5 or so jump attempts. Jumping is so rare of a need, is it really advantageous spending that much time practicing?
Since jumping is such a rarity of a need for me, I simply use my break cue shaft only. Try it, it works. ;)

Predator Air 2 Jump
First time I used it, I was very impressed by its accuracy and ease.

I've tried several custom jumpers, but not one made by other name brands like Jacoby or McDermott.
Of those I tried, I'd tend to find drawbacks. So I am now skeptical of custom jumpers.

The drawbacks are not necessarily flaws but rather lacking of one feature or another. Though, one $80 jumper I got was probably as shitty as a broomstick with a jumper tip.

This situation came up last week. A guy I practice with was telling me that maybe he needs to get a jump cue soon. Well, in that practice session, I did win one game with a jump shot I made and I got out. So I used that as an example to him -- I said, "see" -- this game is a case that supports you getting a jump cue. It literally won that game for me.

I see the same answers alot about kicking but it seems to be overlooked that jumping is soo beneficial if you play alot of different places. The condition of the rails can be soo that kicking is a crap shoot but the straight line of jumping never changes.
