A buddy of mine bought a 1950 model Atlas Press 12x36 wood lathe.I was wondering what kind of attachments or set up whould it take to build cues on it.

While I've seen some very rudimentary cues made on wood lathes, I wouldn't suggest trying it. If you want to make cues you need a metal working lathe, not a wood lathe. Many cuemakers use wood lathes for sanding shafts or doing finish work, but I don't know of any that use one for actualy creating cues.
