Attention cuemakers....

I am currently self-employed and work outdoors. I feel my age and the heat just don't mix as well as it use to, so I am looking for something new. Are there any books or videos aimed at a beginner level cue making? I have always worked with my hands and like working with wood. Should I just start of with a simple lathe to see if I like making basic cues?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm not a cue maker but I know that www.cuecomponents.com has a program where they will guide you through the process of making your own cue. I'm sure you can learn a lot since you'll be learning from an experienced builder instead of books or dvds. you'll also have your own cue by the end of it and from there you can determine weather it will be something you would want to do.

Its not quite so simple & basic as you'd think. Best advice you'll ever get is to buy the Hightower book...read it first then decide if its worth it. There are a lot of very good cuemakers right now who can't even sell their cues. Hobby is one thing...making a living...I'd be very careful.

There are a lot of very good cuemakers right now who can't even sell their cues. Hobby is one thing...making a living...I'd be very careful.

Some very good points there. I did do a google soon after starting this thread and came across Hightower's book. Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for the heads-up, but that won't work for me. I remember reading that thread awhile ago. If I would have read that thread about 5 years ago....it would have been a done deal. I am newly married now, trying to make a baby and have two mortgages....you see...not the right time. I think I should start something out just a hobby. Since I am seasonally employed, I will have Dec-March to do something like this.
