Our pool room is going to hold our first in house 3 Cushion tournament and I am looking for suggestions. We are currently thinking along the lines of double elimination and having 3 handicapped levels
A race to 25
B race to 20
C race to 15

That sort of thing. I am looking for 3 Cushion players that have played in tournaments. Tell me what formats you liked. Which ones you didnt. Any positive suggestions for lower level players? This is still early in the planning stages. Thanks for any help.
 
I would recommend calling Doug Brink (evenings, Mon-Fri) at 816-358-5977. He would have good info I think, plus he may even want to come to St. Louis to play.
 
Round Robin is how all the tournaments are currently played.

It takes longer but everyone gets there moneys worth in games.

Cueandcushion, will the tournament be USBA sanction. I heard the USBA will be using a "Split" tournament format for 2007 3 Cushion tournaments. Information in January 2007 USBA Newletter.

A players play other A players. B players play other B players.
A player .800 average or better. B player average below .800. What would be your average for A player, B player, and C player?

I agree a round robin format.

Maybe you could have a junior player! We need Junior player. Talk to Dieckman on that issue.

It definitely will not be sanctioned. This is just for fun since so many of our regulars are playing 3 cushion now. How long would a 16 player tourny take if round robin? 32 player tourny? I dont think many of our players average .800 So I dont know what cutoff points we would have.


EDIT...The tournament will be invitational ONLY to work out all the problems we see coming with spots and such.

It depends on how many tables and players you have. A popular format is to have a weekly handicapped "rapid fire" tournament in which the top player goes to 15-20 points and the weakest player might only go to 6.

Traditionally, 3-C tournaments are played as round-robins, but if you have only two tables, this may be too long. One way to handle 16 players on two tables is to draw them into groups of four. Each group shows up at a preset time and play a round-robin among themselves, so each player gets three games. The top two in each of the four groups advance to the finals, which can be single elimination. The races you mention will take about an hour, so it would take 3 hours for a group of 4 to finish its round robin.
 
i cant make a ball playing 3-cushion. ;)

seriously it is a wonderful game to watch top players play, i just never got the hang of it, i wish it was more popular thatn is has beemn the 22 years i've been around cue spord
