Automatic Aiming?

I was playing in a local tournament @ Steinway Billiards last week. Anyway, I played a pro player race to 5 even up and beat him on the hill. I was up 4-2 on the guy and he came back and was breaking on the hill but broke dried and I ran out. I was playing very strong and my confident level was very high and it showed in my game.

One of the thing I did noticed was that throughout the whole match, I didn't aim (no system..no thought on where I should aim)....everything was automatic. I was thinking about strategy and focusing on my key shot that I need to make or key safety when I'm on the table.

Curious when anyone is playing good, do anyone still think about aiming? should you?

For me it seem like I just can see, feel and understand the shot that I need to make.
I've been through lots of systems especially my own and I realize that if I have to think about aiming when I'm playing in a match..I'm in deep trouble.

Funny thing with my own system is that I don't think about it anymore when I'm practicing or playing.

I guess, you really have to learn to aim so you don't have to aim. :)

I'm guessing the shots that came up in your match are shots you've hit thousands of times. Eventually you learn to approach a shot a certain way, get down to a shot a certain way, sight the shot a certain way and stand a certain way...and so on.

I've played and spoke with some world class snooker players and every one said how very little thinking went into the actual aiming process, and some even said aiming didn't cross their minds.

When you start playing and even upto being an "A" player (I use A player loosely as we don't have any rating system like that here and I'm just going on what I believe an A player to be) having a system to guide you into the shot like can really help. But once you get to the highest possible standard of play, very few will conciously aim. It may be clear by watching them that they are using an aiming system; a pivot here, a shuffle there. But they will naturally do it, with zero concious thoughts.

Its very hard to "not think" when playing, few people can do it. Concentrating on your position, working out the CB path deffinitely helps to keep your mind away from thinking about aiming.

Clearly it worked for you, your potting must have been excellent and your position must have been spot on to beat a pro.

Keep up the good work

No, as a rule, when playing well we do not think about aiming. That's why we need a system, so we don't have to think about it all the time....it's like driving a car, you can drive without thinking, IF you have a system for steering, braking and accelerating.

Wait...I thought...making love to a beautiful woman...with the lights off, in the dark...was the way to increase one's 'Feel'.

Now you're telling us that it's the way to 'automatic aiming'.

I'm getting confused.

just use a TOI , youll be alright

Feeling your way to that TOI with auto aim?

Okay...

Let's get back to serious. I used to 'auto aim'...with english, but now with TOI, I'm not 'aiming' at all. But I am purposely & consciously aligning & then just feeling the shot by creating more angle with the tip position & stroke to get the ball into the pocket.

TOI is more structured pre stroke but with less 'pressure' regarding 'aiming'. The focus turns to dynamic execution instead of on aiming.

I'm playing faster now than I probably ever have. I used to be a bit of slow player as I had to fine tune the aim with the spin. Now I'd say I'm more normal or even on the quicker side.

From what I've seen of CJ, he seems to be a fast player.

I'm still waiting for TOI to go on full auto pilot.

"Automatic Aiming" is what Tor Lowry mentions in his 2.5 hour long instructional video (which is free at youtube)

When I'm playing well and I'm on auto-pilot, for me, that's when I am in "dead stroke" or "the zone" . Everything just comes natural and very easy to me when that's going on.

TOI, but using it to get deep into the "Zone" or otherwise known as "Dead Stroke".

The TOI certainly allows the is "auto pilot," and I'm living proof that it's effective. My specialty wasn't developing the TOI, but using it to get deep into the "Zone" or otherwise known as "Dead Stroke". When you get more precise on your "cue tip targeting" and your stoke is consistent you will be ready to enter "The Zone".

Just get down on the inside of the cue ball and let it happen, you may over cut some shots to begin with, just simply hit it fuller, when you are hitting every shot like it's straight in (to either the center or edge of OB) you "have arrived". :D
