I have a josey custom cue . It's my first custom besides a dominiak I owned years ago. It has a joint size of .844 and the butt is 1.277. Now what is average? Is this on the smaller side? Do the sizes of most of the makers on the forum differ greatly? Thanks in advance!!

Don't know how much they differ. My Jacoby joint size is 0.845 & the butt measured right at the very end is 1.22. My Schon measures 0.840 at the joint & the butt measures 1.25 at the very end of the butt.

The thing is some cues have more than one or two tapers in the butt.

forget the taper then. I am really just interested in hearing about joint and butt size. I have heard a lot about some cues that have smaller butt diameter or joint and wanted to know what's out there. maybe I would like to try one sometime. I was looking for input and sizes. Hope I worded this a little better.;)

I think the most common butt taper is like .840 at the joint and around 1.250 at the bottom on a single taper.

Thanks for the Reply Joey. I'd leave you rep but it would probably bring yours down LOL!!

Anybody got anything else to add?

I agree with Joey...

.840 - 1.25 straight taper is about average.

you will be surprised how accurate a caliper your hand is...I find almost everyone really notices .010" difference. My personal cue has a .124 butt and the first thing most people say when they handle is always about the size of the handle.

A cue with a joint larger than .850 looks out of proportion to me and requires compromises (opinion) in the taper/spine of the shaft.

Hope this helps

just my opinion...you be the judge

I build my cues to be .850 at the joint and 1.250 at the end of the butt. I will build to any reasonable dimension requested by the buyer, but .850 and 1.250 is my standard and I think it is pretty much the industry standard with a few exceptions.

in a couple days when i get to Vegas i'll measure some Szams and Bushkas and post the results

I would really appreciate that Fatbody. Thanks for taking the time. Don't forget about me!! Thanks.

I use the following sizes for my cues:

Joint .860

A-Joint 1000

grip / wrap area 1000 - 1150

Butt 1250

I like to have the joint of my my cues a little larger than most. I think the most common sizes used are between:

Joint .840 - .850

A-Joint .900 - 1000

Butt 1230 - 1270

This is all based upon cues that I have measured that have come through my shop over the years.

Hope this helps!!!
