OK, just thought it might be nice to get a taste of what level of players we have on here. FL had some impressive credentials but didn't always say the right things. I upset him when I didn't agree but the people who are looking for advice should be careful who they listen too. Even the very best don't do everything right.

Since we're not all from the states I have come up with fairly general levels, just abot of fun that might offer a valuable insight if we can get everyone to vote?

Every place I've played at in the 4 years I have either played average or as one of the top 3 players. I will be returning to the States this December and hopefully by next Fall be playing in more tournaments/tours! I am ranked a 6 sl, APA scale! (according to my playing buddies that currently play APA)

Not sure what that rating is Zim, you care to explain for the none american users? Although I get that your a top club player I wouldn't mind understanding how the ratings work in the US?

Hey AZ billiards should sponsor a comp, wouldn't it be good to see who where the best players of all the users? Entry should be the usual fee but maybe also a minimum number of posts or months of membership! Sure would help to sort the, (as larry would say :-) bozo's from the genuine players!

I have never played in an APA league in the States! My best friend and many other players that I've played with for years and know MY game pretty well, they say I would be a solid 6! (ask DAN D, he's a member here) If I understand it correctly, the rank runs 2-7, 2 being your beginner player and 7 being a B++ or an A player, I fall into the 6sl (sl= skill level)

I think that an AZBilliards Forum 9-Ball tournament would be cool! Maybe have it in a few different places around the States to have qualifiers, then the top xx players could play in AZ somewhere chosen by AZBilliards of course!
Can this happen Mike? (preferebly next year, since I wont be in country until then, haha)

APA rankings can be confusing depending on whether you're talking about 8-ball or 9-ball. In APA 9-ball, the ranks go from 1-9, and I would say 7-9 would be top club players, 4-6 would be average club players and 1-3 would be "crap" club players (sorry, not my wording ;-).

The rankings in 8-ball are top-heavy, such that everyone who is 7,8, or 9 in 9-ball tends to be a 7 in 8-ball. I'm an sl 6 in both 9-ball and 8-ball, which I would still call average club player speed.

I can kick anybody's ass on a given day but for the most part I am average. I always feel great though when I knock off a big shark who takes me too lightly. Nothing zones me in faster than playing a guy who doesn't respect me. ;)

Me too. I seem to play better out of state, however.
I hate to lose around people who know me.
I let them inhibit my play. Anybody else like
that? Play better out of your area?

I see FL voted. LOL. It is so hard to accurately rate someone. Where I live we play basically only 8-ball and I am considered the best. I win 90% to 95% of the games I play. they tell me I have the best stroke and shoot like a pro. I just laugh to myself because I know that I am the best here only because they are so bad. Then when I go to the two local bars for their weekly tournaments the competition gets better but I am still always considered the one to beat. Then there are the pool hall tournaments where the competition really gets better and I drop to average. I suppose if I ever entered a really good amateur tournament I would be two and out. What I am saying is that all these rating systems depend on the level of people competing. Jake PS-- I joined the APA again and am a SL-4 in 9-ball and find it a lot of fun toying with my opponent. Doesn't make much sense trying to be a 6 or better in APA when it is so much easier to win as a 4. Points for the team is the name of the game in 9-ball. Our team is 31 points ahead going into our last match this thursday.

I put down that I'm an average club player, but it really depends on what kind of club it is and who is playing there. I can run a 9 ball rack if there are no clusters or big problems. I have run 5 racks in a row on two different occasions (9 ball). On two different occasions I broke, made a ball and ran 7 out in 1 pocket. I get a lot of compliments on my stroke and have made pros take a second look but I'm not a gambler. That doesn't mean that I don't play for money it just means I don't gamble; there is a difference.

isnt there an above average player? :D
i cant say im an average player, but i cant say im a top club player as well...:D well, its my own humble opinion...:)
i can beat most of the average players around my place in rotation, 8-ball, and straight pool most of the time. but when im having a bad day, im just an average player...:D

Great response guys (and girls), seems like we are blessed with a real wealth of talent (and a few very honest players)

Wonder who the big money player is, shame we don't have any top pro's un the board?

I voted as top club pro as I am just getting back into the game, I have a lot to prove before I can claim to be a hall of famer - but mark my words LOL!

Thanks for the feedback

:-)

Be true to yourself and to others, and be happy and confident. This is what I want for everybody.

I agree totally on the skill levels. You and I have identical skill levels in both. APA skill levels can easily be skewed. We have a 7 in our division that has a hard time running 4 or 5 balls and there are 4's and 5's who can run a rack. I would consider myself an average club player as well.
