You convinced me -- it was a bad idea. I had not realized that all of the negativity I experienced was a result of my screen name disclosing my hometown.
I think you're going to have a hard time getting people to voluntarily give up their locations with no obvious benefit to them. Now, if it's something as broad as saying my location is in the USA, Mexico, Europe, or Asia, I don't really see that as an issue. But I don't see anyone going out of their way to shout out their home town to a bunch of strangers on the internet with no context involved.
And for the record, I don't see anything inherently wrong with asking. And in some ways I do think it would be "neat" to see where everyone is from. But "neat" doesn't cover the potential downside to having one's location made public. Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see a clear upside to it.
5 minutes south of Dayton. Now, will someone help me find out where in the hell West Carrollton, Ohio, is?
would you post where you live in a open forum? not happening with this cat. too many loonies out there. if i need that kind of info i'll ask the person direct. only way. What's the downside? Asking from New Orleans.
I've had issues with on-line and phone scam artists. Once someone knows the town its too easy these days to zero in. I've said on here before where i live so i don't sweat being stalked/robbed by anyone here. The town/city is one thing but address/ph/email, etc is definitely a no-go unless i know them well.Yep. My location is right there. And I voluntarily put it there because I don't have a problem with it. The reason I responded the way I did to your initial post is because, in this day and age, people tend to get a little leery about being asked specific personal questions online.
I don't think it's a bad idea. I just don't see the value in it. If people want to know where I'm from they can either ask or just look at my profile. And if it comes down to posts like "I'm playing in XYZ City This Week, Where Should I Play?" most folks from those cities are more than happy to chime in. Otherwise, it just looks like a website trying to get information.
I'll be the first one to tell you that I don't know everything and I'm not going to pretend that I do. And unlike a lot of folks we run into online, I'm more than willing to change my opinion when presented with compelling information. But in this case, with the information I have, my opinion is that it doesn't really add much value.
Same here if anyone is ever in the greater Theresa, WI area. There's a lot of paranoia out there.
Of course, just because someone is paranoid, doesn't mean that everyone isn't actually out to get them!
Next time you're down here in Orlando let me know and we'll hit some balls!
My buddy always says he's from 'bum-f%^k-Arkansas'
Hey Garczar : Be carefull That is my home town lol
