The AzBilliards Discussion Forum is enjoyed by pool players, fans, and enthusiasts from around the world...Here is a list of questions. If you don't want to answer one, just leave it blank. JAM,

I think it would be intersting if we knew the median (or is it the mean?? I can't remember a dang thing from college...and I din't even party...that much, LOL!!!) age too. If you could tell us how many responses there were too that would be great, maybe even the percentage of registered members that responded???

Sorry I'm being picky and asking for so much. :(

Thanx! :)

Landshark, the mean age is approximately 39 years of age, or to be exact, 38.95, out of the representative sampling of AzBilliards Discussion Forum. Over a 42-day period, 212 responded to the AGE category. :)

OK now I am a bit confused, you originally said that the average age was 38.95, thus the total sum of all respondants ages divided by the total number of respondants. The mean (or median..I forget) is the age that most respondants are...example...if five people responded 1 was 35, 2 were 25, 1 was 56, and 1 was 12 the mean age (or median...I still forget :( ) would be 25.

Thank you for all the time you have put into this. :)

Mean..median?

Landshark....hehehe The "MEAN" age is 50 if you keep picking on JAM  !LOL :D

the book defintion of the word "mean" in this case is: the averge of a set of values. which is basically what jam said.

the book defintion of the word "median" in this case is: relating to or constituting the middle value of an ordered set of values (or the average of the middle two in an even-numbered set); "the median value of 17, 20, and 36 is 20";

so basically what you are asking for is neither the mean or the median :D

thanks

VAP is correct. Mean is the same thing as average. Median, to put it simply, is the middle value. In other words, half the population is above that point and half the population is below that point.

In this case the median is most likely irrelevant.

Thank you JBD and VAP for correcting me. The term I should have been referring to is mode :o ...I thought the three terms were average, mean, and median, when infact the three terms are mean, median, and mode. I don't really conduct studies on a daily basis and the terms escaped me. I was wrong. The mode is what I was referring to. I would be interested in the mode of this study. Also when I responded the first time I was preoccupied and missed the fact that she had included the total number of respondents in her first post. I am sorry for making you repeat yourself JAM. :(

I was not picking on JAM, and if I came across that away I am sorry. I really like JAM and the stories of her experiences in the pool world. I also think JAM has talent with words and expresses herself well on this message board, especially in threads where flame wars are capable of starting. I imagine that she is the same in person. IMO, everyone can learn something from her, myself included (and I have).

Again, I think this survey was an awesome idea and I, for one, appreciate all the time she has put into extracting the data. She is an asset to the sport.

Thanks for the beautiful flowers, Landshark! I appreciate your kind words. :)

Math was never my strong suit, and when I was a youngster, we didn't have the advantage of calculators and machines. So I calculated the average the old-fashioned way. I actually thought the average age would be higher than 39. Here's the numbers, all 212 of them. I hope I added them up correctly before I divided them by 212: 50, 33, 47, 56, 31, 45, 40, 58, 33, 34, 57, 27, 31, 56, 32, 34, 36, 35, 25, 31, 51, 27, 54, 33, 66, 51, 29, 19, 22, 30, 31, 58, 54, 37, 35, 41, 61, 38, 48, 27, 34, 32, 27, 51, 38, 29, 65, 55, 47, 28, 25, 27, 22, 55, 24, 20, 48, 56, 47, 53, 36, 52, 33, 26, 30, 27, 37, 33, 33, 58, 51, 54, 52, 56, 43, 29, 46, 25, 34, 43, 53, 51, 32, 57, 23, 31, 58, 21, 47, 33, 55, 30, 19, 34, 40, 20, 53, 53, 29, 55, 43, 32, 30, 28, 32, 26, 32, 51, 22, 44, 54, 39, 60, 36, 64, 29, 27, 53, 45, 35, 28, 53, 35, 38, 25, 36, 35, 30, 59, 23, 33, 60, 52, 38, 64, 36, 28, 28, 22, 35, 54, 54, 54, 43, 30, 50, 49, 33, 45, 24, 50, 35, 48, 48, 27, 23, 26, 38, 57, 38, 49, 56, 33, 31, 44, 60, 16, 51, 36, 47, 36, 33, 54, 39, 33, 38, 43, 29, 46, 57, 31, 22, 25, 16, 28, 39, 33, 31, 32, 29, 41, 24, 37, 24, 39, 30, 63, 69, 38, 21, 35, 33, 45, 28, 19, 47, 46, 16, 24, 56, 39, and 24.

One thing for sure, we sure are a diverse bunch of folks here at the AzBilliards Discussion Forum! :p

Landshark,

I wasn't trying to start anything or be critical. :(
Just picking on you,ya young whippersnapper! (my age 44 LOL)

JAM,

Yeh, know what you mean,I was at the end of the pencil and paper generation! Hmmm...now what did I do with that abacus? :D

Looking forward to the rest of the results JAM and kudos to you for the survey!

Oh, I know that you were picking on me, LOL! ;) I just didn't want anyone else to think I was picking on or trying to start something with JAM. I did post several times within a few seconds and I didn't take enough time to even realize that she provided some of the info I was seeking already. I just wanted to make that clear...it was directed at everyone, not just you.

I say let the picking and goofing off resume...I'm ALWAYS game for it!! :p ;)

According to the dictionary it is the "mode", here's the definition from www.dictionary.com

Mathematics. The number or range of numbers in a set that occurs the most frequently

I would expect the lack of calculators growing up would have enhanced your math skills because you had to actually do arithmetic, I know it enhanced mine.
At any rate, regardless of your math skills, you're doing yeoman's work and deserve kudos for it (or as my kids might say props, but I think even that is passe now). Even if you never get the data fully tabulated, you did a great service just getting it out there in black and white for all to see if they so choose.

Hmm... So I'm average in age (well for couple more weeks at least) and I'm the ONLY roundeye, and only member responding from Japan!

BTW, when are you gonna finish the "Favorite Beverages" stats? ;)

Mode

OK, unless I messed up (and I wouldn't put that past me, LOL) the mode of the age group from the respondents JAM had already processed is the age of 33 with twelve respondents. It appears as though the age group that frequents AZ the most is those in their mid-to-late 20's thru late 30's. While this is interesting information, I can not help to deduce that this just proves my slacker generation would rather play on a message board than work while they are at their jobs, LMAO! :D

Here is the break down of all the numbers:

Age #

16 2
19 2
20 2
21 2
22 5
23 3
24 6
25 5
26 3

36 5
37 2

41 2
42 0

Also, everyone please give JAM a hand....just doing this was a pain in my butt...I can not imagine the time she has put, and continues to put into all of this. [enter hand clapping gremlin here]
