Hey guys I am in the process of orgainzing the 1st Annual Yarmouth Festival of Pool.

One of the events this will include is Town Championship aimed at getting players of all levels to play. Believe or not for a small town we have a fair few players but there is gap in abilities and I want this to be a community event.

We are expecting close to 64 local players of varying abilities.

So I need ideas on the best way to handicap it, so that it is simple yet fair.

To give you an idea the Town itself is supporting us and the local papers, radios etc are giving coverage as the Mayor will be playing as well as awarding prizes.

Cheesy I know but it will be a fun weekend for all, and the town is crying out for such events.

So please any ideas on how to hanicap it fairly would be appreciated.....

Handicapping......

What information do you have to base handicap on? Our local league system puts on a open team and singles tournament once a year which draws entrants from 300+ miles. They usually have the entrant provide their League information on which to base rating. Play is in divisions; AA & A, B, C, and D. Top 2 or 3 move up next year. The team handicap is by committee; two divisions A teams, and B teams.

I don't really have any specific league info for some of the players, but they those are the weaker players. And plenty of knowledge of who is who and how good they are.

My real problem is making the play over 2 days fair, with all having as equal a chance as possible.

I have thought about 3 divisions of players with the top 2 of each playing off for the title.

Run the tournament with a consolation bracket. Something like the first 16 people knocked out of the main tournament are automatically entered into the consolation tournament or something similar..............Another idea to attract players that are in the lower skill sets and not run off the higher skilled players due to handicapping is to offer random prizes or incentives this way anyone who ever pays their money has a shot at winning something even if their skills are not the highest. This gives incentive for the best players to prove they are the best and gives the lesser players a shot at being the best and if they fall short they have a second chance at the random consolation prizes...........Pay out the top 12 out of 32 or whatever numbers apply then even the middle finishers get their entry back so why not give it a shot.....Any of these ideas can be adjusted to your tourny's specifics but it gives some alternatives to actual handicapping.

My first instinct is to say that your idea of splitting people into a few divisions with the tops of each competing for the overall title is best. That way a person could win an award for their division and possibly the "Champ of the City" too.

I can't see how you could create a single handicapping system for the entire city that would be reasonable. Afterall, the "Champ of the City" should be the best your city has to offer, not the player that was handicapped furthest under their ability.

Eight divisions should cover every distinction...men/women with 18 & under, 19-40, 41-65, 66 & over. No handicaps.

The 8 winners play off for overall...no handicaps.

I am leaning towards different divisions myself, with the winners or top 2 in a final play off.

Thanks for the help guys
