can`t make a ball anymore
Silver Member
Starting Dec 12th daily at 8 p.m. to close, we will allow byob in my pool room in Thorndale Pa.

Can Beer only, NO Liquor or Wine,

I have been against this for 15 yrs but must now adjust to try and stay in business.
Can`t just make it on pool and snacks anymore, not many dedicated players as before, you must be a recreation center nowdays.

Wish me luck as this is my last hope.

Best of luck adjusting in this tight economy. The 25cent vending bulk machines work well for me. Gumballs, Skittles, Mixed Nuts, Hot Tamales, Peanuts, M&M's. I recommend it. Pretty much theft proof and doesnt take up floor space. I have 5 machines and everytime I open one theres $100 in it. Not a ton of money but every little bit helps. Hot chocolate good in the winter too. $1 a cup and make it yourself. Just throwing out ideas in case you havent tried them yet. Good luck fellow fighter!

always open for deas

Yes, I have some of those 25cent vending bulk machines and they do help a lot, We must keep on trying new and different things.

Hot choc is also a good seller to the younger crowd here.

I lost my soda cooler cause I didn`t buy enough product from Coca Cola.

So I got my own fridge with a freezer on top, now I sell sodas and Icream in the freezer to. Plus now I can put in what ever I want to sell.

I have started selling those 90 second microwave meals and they do well.
Thank god for the dollar stores.

Thanks Craig

Hi Craig, It is a funny thing but Chris's in Chicago is also BYOB and I asked an employee why they did not advertise this in the local college newspapers as it seemed like a natural fit to me. They responded that they would only have to babysit the kids more. IE card them and make sure they were behaving themselves. If I was in college and could go play pool and do BYOB I'd be there in a New York minute!!
Seems like a winner to me!
Good Luck

Its always about legal issues and business licenses and your liability. If you let 3 - 21 yr olds in and they sneak beer to their 20 yr old girlfriends, it could cost you thousands of dollars on top of hearings with the liquor board and even revocation of your business license. If you have too much of that going on you have to add more employees increasing your costs more. Legally we stopped having a cigarrette machine in our business because of the changes under Clinton I that increased the fines and put more liability on us legally to enforce that a 17yr old doesnt borrow a cigarrette from a 18 yr old. Its all BS, but you just dont want to deal with it after a while. We advertise to colleges and high schools just because we have student rates. Still happy I do not have alcohol. I have enough drama with sober people. I hope I can continue to operate under this circumstance.

BYOB Is to help me get people in the door, business is super bad right now.

I owned a cinnamon roll franchise(existing franchise in major mall for 7 years then sold it but when we first started out we struggled and I approached the landlord and asked for help!
He gave us a rent adjustment which kept us in business and we made it work!
hope you receive some relief to get through your tough times now!

This is exactly my point! Get them in the door, if cannot accomplish this how can you survive at all. Yes it is more work to oversee the alcohol issue but if they are not coming in the door then you certainly will not survive.. There are pool halls here giving away free table time on certain evenings and they still have tables open on those nights!!!

I recommend you all pool room or business owners ask for help with your lease rather then ignore paying this will not happen for long!
I saw firsthand the plywood and padlocks go up in the wee hours!

They make sure of legal issues and don't mess around!

DID YOU NEED A BYOB LICENSE FROM THE STATE?

As far as I could find out, liability insurance is all that is needed, and permission from your boro or township.

I just heard from my insurance guy and they treat byob the same as selling and serving it and the cheapest insurance his company could find was $5000.00 a year, so I wont be having extra insurance.

Big brother wins again.

I have had byob for 2 weeks now and it has done nothing to help business yet. Players just don`t have money

Given the current state of affairs right now, I would be undercover byob, let them do what they like, just turn a blind eye-no open obvious bottles. Gotta do what ya gotta do, thats what i'm back to.

I purchased my poolroom in july of 08, it was dying when i got it, new coat of paint, cleaned it up then in oct we had a big breast cancer benefit, didnt cost me hardly anything, alot of local vendors donated products for raffles,as well as my distributers for cues and supplies, cue and case, predator etc. as well as materal to build a stage from home depot and lowes, food was donated by local restaraunts, drinks for my beer and soda vendor, and we had 13 local bands that played for free, got great radio and media coverage for free, raised alot of money for the charity, bt the best part,,,,,,,, great exposure to new customers, place was clean, fresh looking, great event, and i would say 80% have come back and about 50% have become regular customers, its took alot of legwork and planning but it worked, now we have a stage free, live local music that doesnt cost us a penny every friday night, big tourney on sunday, hot body contest on friday night, and in november we bought 6 new diamond professional 9 ft tables with matching lights, simonis cloth, and 2 gc 4s with lights. the bottom line dont be afraid to try new things, in todays times, you have to make changes to survive. If anyone needs help setting up a event like this, pm me and i will help.
