Back Pocket 9-Ball Finals

I'm not familiar with the game. Is it just the 9-ball that has to go in a specific pocket? And are the pockets assigned at the start like one pocket?

Two shots before, Grady shoots an interesting shot: shoots the 9 straight up the middle of the table, sends the CB to the long rail, and they both rebound and kiss the 9 towards his pocket.

Do you think it was deliberate (as a hopeful long-shot)?

the way i play
you call which back pocket is yours before you break,
all rules of 9 ball are in play
except you have to make the 9 in your pocket to win
many times it comes down to one ball one pocket.
Hint... if you are much better at the end game of one pocket than your opponent
often times you can beat a straighter shooter who can give you the 7 in regular 9 ball.....

Nope - that was just a lucky kiss.

...snip....

Anyone play this game today?
The game is a Philly game. I believe it was invented by Pete Fusco. Up until 5 years ago, it was played daily in the remaining Philly poolrooms. I don't know if its played much now. I haven't been in Philly for a while.

It seems like it could have become The Game as it gives people a little taste of one pocket strategy without the monotony of almost every ball being a safety war. I am not sure why it never caught on. Maybe someone should do an annual Grady memorial tournament with that format.
