Back to the future McFly...

What if you could get a cue from a defunct company? Or a deceased cuemaker? What if you could go Back to the Future? It's 1977, the Bee Gees are Stayin' Alive, The Pinto and Vega are US's answer to the oil crisis, Sanford and Son, Happy Days are on the tube.. You walk into Palmer Custom cues and lay down the Huggy Bear bank roll on a custom cue and say.. Yo' my man Pete, what will your jive ass be making me for 4 large, baby... I need something that matches my 1977 El Dorado, with my disco ball...

Maybe it would look something like this...

After the Palmer cache joke of late March we got to thinking about a dream Palmer. What if Balner didn't pass away and he carried over the M to be the model 21. Like the J to the 16. What could it look like? What would be an accurate vision of a wavy veneer cue made for the third catalog. So after many discussions between Mark, Paul Rubino and myself we finalized our "dream" model 21. The above pictures are in progress. No one better than Paul Rubino to bring this vision to life. He has extensive experience in the Palmer / Paradise traditions of cuemaking and plus he had all the parts. What you see here is a cue made of ALL Palmer parts except for the handle and the pin. The rings, the plastic, the scarab inlays, the dots, the bands, all Palmer. Paul utilized two M blanks to make this cue, one for the forearm and one for the shafts and butt sleeve.
In case you noticed, one of the ideas was to reverse the wavy veneers and incorporate them into the handle. But it didn't flow with the concept. so it was nixed. You should just realize that Paul was able to duplicate the wave and match them up. One of Pauls many talents is his accuracy and his handiness with design and machining.
It will be finished with a cortland wrap and ready to roll in a few weeks.

Big Suprise!

Paul Rubino is a great cue maker!
I think hello McFly is what I say to you!
I can't believe his cue magic isn't known to all! Great work by one of a truely short list of cue makers on earth that can even imagine HTF Eugene B. did things that to this day still have modern cue makers scratching their heads! Amazing work!
Nick :)

Yep, Paul does great work. He is a pleasure to deal with and he is a wealth of knowledge. A lot of his work is "unique", he just made two cues that were very different. One was an entire cue of bakelite, and the second was a red/white/blue themed cue from a Palmer blank. He has made some very interesting cues recently using a titlist and an older butterfly.

I'll second that! He also is one of the nicest, most honorable cue builders I have ever come across. He is an asset to the cuemaking trade.

Joe, that cue needs to be sitting on a nice houndstooth pattern. Man, you've got to get with the program. Seriously, that is going to be a monster cue....can't wait to see how she turns out. Sean

What kind of finish is it going to have?

Sludge from a river in NJ, same as Palmer... :D

Seriously... I will leave that to Mr. Rubino... My heart wants something of the period, my mind doesn't want it turning yellow.

I know Jerry could do one, but I need the finished cue to be worth more than what I paid for the blank. (No offense intended to -R-) But like I said, I am sure he could do something that would look the part and I am sure it would be smoking. But for this project, I needed to go Three Rivers Slim....

Gawd, that's a pretty cue! Still, I'd rather keep my model M (2nd catalog) than buy one of these. You see, my "Palmer Original" has my name under that clear plastic ring. Don't get me wrong, this is a gorgeous cue. But it's kind of like looking at an excellently done Porsche Speedster (fiberglass body) replica. Most folks don't know the difference...but you do, because you have knowledge of the real thing. P.S: No yellow tint detected on my Palmer's finish. Probably because it sat in a closet, in it's case, in my home, for a few decades before I really realized what I had. The ferrules are turning pink on both shafts though...does this mean Ivory?

I guess when you can't find the real thing....a replica is okay.

Well you're missing the point of the cue, albeit you are entitled to your opinion. I have sold 5 M's and probably 4-5 Supremes. I, unlike you, was not old enough to get an original Palmer order in, being the spring chicken that I am. :p It's not a replica, be a reinvisioning if you will of what could have been. The cue is not meant to fool anyone. It's a nice idea to be able to build a semi-tribute cue using original parts. If you read the third catalog they leave space for a "Model 21" of your own design. This is kind of my Model 21, in that regard.

Do you use red chalk, the only reason I can see ferrules turning pink. Well maybe one of those red lined box cases of yesteryear.
