Bad deal or no?

Bait and switch. He owes you the metal bench and tips, simple as that.
Of course, you don't know what the original bench and the amount of
tips were in the original deal, then the owner had second thoughts about
including it all when he got a live one.

Gotta be explicit about what's included, and state it clearly to your buddy..
nothing worse than being the guy in the middle. Live and learn.

"A rather sturdy metal bench comes with it if wanted as well as all the tips and accessories."

This is quoted word for word right from the post that you quoted, it clearly states the metal bench and tooling is included.
When I am involved in 3rd party dealings I always make sure to have my cell phone handy. As far as I know all smart phones have cameras, very nice ones at that, and almost everyone has a smart phone. I always take a picture and send it to the end buyer just to make sure that I am being sold the correct items just to cover my ass. It takes only seconds to snap a few pictures and text or email them to someone. Like they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. I am sorry for your misfortune.

I don't think 'if wanted' has to mean 'free' though.

If the metal bench was not included my legal representation would express that it should have read "a rather sturdy bench is available" not "a rather sturdy bench comes with it".
The way its worded it sounds like he has the lathe mounted to a wooden bench that may have been nicer than the metal bench that was included. If the seller was trying to convey that the metal bench was available for an extra charge he has a very poor grasp of the English language as well as anyone who interprets it the same as the seller.
The proof is in the lack of a response from the seller, Im sure when he had someone on the hook to buy said lathe he not difficult to contact as is the case now.

Your buddy should have known what he was supposed to pick up. .. call you if things change. What would you have done if you yourself showed up to buy it and seller didn't want to give all the parts? Your buddy should have called you when things didn't go at planned.

Bad deal or no?

Bad deal. You did not receive what you negotiated.

IMO, if you are shipping the lathe from MT to MD by common carrier, the metal bench would increase the cost significantly. Maybe more than it's value. The tips are another story.

Hopefully you can earn enough work to put this setback behind you.
