Bad Economic and Cuemakers

I would like to present this question and know current situation of other cuemakers . I am part-time cuemaker and Economist and this theme seems myself interesting.

The bad economic situation begins in October 2008 (In Europe), I personally, Built 15 Custom Cues per year only and I have waiting list, but I have noted that consultations and asks abaut my custom cues
descended a 35% since Octuber 2008,


Is Damaging bad economic world situation to our work??

Here at Arnot Cue it is business as usual. The month of December was a little slow but that is not uncommon for me. January has been one of the best months I have ever experienced and I am getting calls so far this month.

A lot of how the ecomony effects you might have to do with your exposure. I have had a large Web Site (www.arnotq.com) for over 13 years and it has brought me almost all of my business.

I have never depended on repairs for a living and refused to work on cheap cues. That cut out most of the repair business for me.

We have however, looked at all the areas we could reduce cost and we found that changing phone service helped to the tune of $1560 per year. Looking at our Electric Bill is our next area of imporvement. These things should have been done long ago but I just didn't take the time.

Maybe i'm a minority, but I have noticed an increase in interest. I haven't openly accepted orders in a few years, so I turn down &/or redirect a lot of work. What was commonly a couple requests per week is now several, sometimes 2-3 per day. I'm noticing a pattern. It's mostly middle aged or older players who took time off from pool to have a career & family, and now that their kids are grown they want to get back into pool again. I see pool rising. I know that's not the general consensus but it's what I see. I also see a rise in interest of quality made custom cues built for playability. Not so much pretty or fancy stuff, but the P/J's & simple pointed cues are busy. I have never spent more time answering the phone or emails than I am now, and all I can say is no, no, no & no. If I had a factory, or at least 25 hrs. in a day i'd be rich. I'm not accepting the work, so somebody is getting busy. I'm not sure who, hopefully all custom cuemakers.

I think for the low volume shops not much has changed. Most will sell every cue they can build and have a waiting list when they die.
