The top four teams and the top male and female shooters in the Nassau Valley Eight-ball Association (NVEA) have been decided and playoff action is set to kick off this week.
The top four teams that advanced to the best-of-seven playoffs include the defending champions, the V8-Splash Strokers going up against Millie's Showstoppers at the Base Road Bar and the C&T Q Cruisers that will be taking on Chesapeake Bad Boys at the C&T Q Bar.
The first set of playoffs were held on Monday night but the results were unavailable up to press time. However team action is scheduled to take place this Wednesday night. Games three and four will be played next Monday, June 18 and Wednesday, June 20.
The rivalry between the Cruisers and the Bad Boys is expected to be heated according to Cruisers' team captain, Grenville Thompson.
"Last year we placed sixth overall but we are trying to improve on our second place finish from several years ago. This season we did well. The highlight of last year was our fifth place finish out of 64 teams in our division at the Florida State Championship," said Thompson.
In the best-of-nine men's singles championship (set to start on Sunday, June 24 at Millie's Place) there will be a face off between C&T Q Cruisers' Calvin Thompson and Bad Boys' Abbey Henfield.
Both Thompson and Henfield will be seeking the defending men's champ, Donald Rahming's crown. Meanwhile the third and fourth place finishers are the Patio Pros' Carl Swann and Over Forty and Sporty's Anthony Dickenson respectively.
Defending women's champion and the NVEA's President Laurie Lightfoot, Synida Johnson and Krystal Turnquest will be playing in the singles' playoffs using a round-robin best--of-five games format.
Women's play is set to get underway Tuesday, June 11 and Thursday, June 13. The two shooters finishing with the best record will get a berth in the championship. Lightfoot said that she is not going into the women's round-robin over confident.
"I have not been shooting that well and both Krystal and Synida shoot well. That is good because it is their first time in the league, so going into the game I am not going to second guess them," said Lightfoot.
Lightfoot added that at the conclusion of the championships, the NVEA is scheduled to take several teams to the Florida State Championships set for July 12-15.
"Every year we travel to Florida and we take nine or 10 teams. Last year we came back home with masters and state championship titles and placed in the top two in the expert division.
"This Florida event has been in existence for at least 26 years and we have been attending for the past 15 years. Every Floridian team competes there and there are at least 200 players registered every year in four to five divisions," said Lightfoot.
