Bandido's cues

Giving away some trade secrets eh ER?

I don't exactly consider this as the trade secret though I do know that only a handful of us do this. Most, as Joseph Cues mentioned, just use unthreaded wood tenon and a Metal 3/8x10 or 16 bolt. Plus the pictured isn't really "the" trade secret of my forearm/handle joint but something more mind boggling.

Are you also a cuemaker?

No, I wish I was, I am just a cue fanatic. I can't find anyone in my area to teach me how to make cues or even do repairs. I have so many designs in my head for cues but, 1. I can't afford to have them all made and 2. I don't know how to make them myself. That comment about no metal in my cues refers to the cues that I own, not made.

I guess nobody at your "location" has found a way to levitate a lathe machine yet.:D

Well, I don't have a place to work either. A friend of mine is buying a new house with a 1200 sqft shed. He plays pool and is into woodworking so I am thinking of buying a lathe and all I need to get started and taking up room in his soon-to-be workshop. See what happens.

Dear mister Reyes,

When I started making cues three years ago, I was happy to have achieved the miracle of being able to make a straight cue. Now, I have the feeling again that I'm standing in my baby shoes when I see and admire your creations.
When they say that the sky is the limit, I begin to wonder if there is even a sky above your skills.

Please continue making us dream (and perhaps a little jalous too) by posting your pictures.

With my deepest respects, Tom Penrose

OMG! I know this has been said over and over again but Mr. Reyes, you really are amazing with all those cues!!! Fantastic!!!

Thank you Tom, Buddha Jones and Gold. You are inspirations that keep a craftsman's artistic juices flowing. And Tom, even if you had typed your message in shorthand, your message is loud and clear, it's very much appreciated.

Dear mister Reyes,

Thank you for the compliment.

By the way, I was really surprised to hear that in fact Mister Sherm Adamson had met you and seen the very tools you displayed in one of your pictures.

This makes me really full of jalousy. I would like to be able to be the tenth of the artist you are. At least, it gives me a goal to achive and a reason for getting on perfecting and arranging my working techniques.
Maybe I will be able one day to say that I made a cue wich I am totally satisfied of. I never have so far...

Thanks again and I can only hope I'll have the honor of meeting some of the greatest cuemakers in the world like yourself (appologies to mister Arnot and mister Dennis Searing who I already met).

Tom Penrose

You're on your way Tom. You already know 2 of the secrets, having a goal and never being satisfied. Also, approach your craft with this always in mind, "Neccesity is the mother of invention". Happy Holidays to you all and thank you, I am happy to have brought about something positive (a smile, pleasant feeling while viewing or a goal) to a lot of people.

Edwin Reyes :)

Is that an X-ray of your cues?
Yes it is. I am an ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technology and CRT (Califorrnia Certified Radiologic Technologist) before I went into cuemaking as a hobby in 1986. I did a lot of radiographic research on cues before I even started making one. I still inspect my cues radiographically from time to time as part of my Quality Assurance.

So how should we "read" that x-ray? What does it mean?;)
OK, I added the 2nd radiograph that I took so that you'll have a complete explanation.

The first radiograph (left), which was taken with a lower penetrating energy, shows that the receiving cavity for the joint screw was done in exacting dimensions. The hole was drilled to only the depth needed as no air pocket at the end of the screw (right end of screw) shows. Air pockets, as the surrounding density of the joint, shows as a "black hole" in this low penetration radiograph.

The second radiograph (right), which was taken with a higher penetrating energy, shows that the ivory joint is capped and threaded onto the forearm's threaded wood tenon. This radiograph also shows that the threads were done with tight clearances between the threads of the ivory and the threads on the forearm tenon as no air pockets are visible.

Hope this helps.

Other Parts

Great!! I can see at least some things to look for now. Do you have files of the butt, handle etc? It would be exciting to see them and other cues ( even from years ago when you were doing "research") you have done in the past. Your findings are very much anticipated... Hope you can share them.;)

Sorry I can't show, in public, other maker's x-rays. That is considered unethical within the circle and same applies to customers' cues. It is only when a customer requests for an xray to be done on "their own" cue for their own files that I do it.

HMMM. That's very professional. Now what if I own several cues that I want x-rayed. I won't show it to the public of course (now that I learned the ethics side of the exercise). Can we make arrangements for that? Personally, I would just like a deeper appreciation of how well or how poorly constructed my cues are.;)
