I just want to share Edwin's CNC taper/inlaying machine project.
I'm here at Edwin's shop right now with him.
He's working at making pieces right , while I'm surfing.:D

Here are some of Ed's ebonies he's been torturing for 3 years.
He says, if they rot, they don't deserve to be made into cues.
Some have survived and will be processed soon.

mmmm.... I think I could see a misalignment there... a few thousandths perhaps... oh and like backlash goin both ways... too inaacurate... dang it joey thrash that thing.... oh I have a small junkyard just outside my shop window... that' very much welcome..... :D :D :D

We just came back from Chinatown to pick up some goodies.
Took the train then "some" walking.
 
Specs: Currently 4-axis but 6-axis ready.
X-axis: THK rails and 4 SR15 linear bearing trucks, 40 inches of travel
1/2-13 all-thread with tiger bronze nut and spring-loaded
anti-backlash nut. *depending on performance may be replaced
with balscrew. Thrust bearings on both ends of drive screw and
flex coupling to 500 oz/in holding torque step motor.
Y-axis: NB low profile wide rails with 4 bearing trucks, 4.25" travel
THK 5mm pitch ballscrew with thrust bearing end mounts, 267 oz/in
step motor
Z-axis: NB low profile wide rails with 4 bearing trucks, 4.25" travel
THK 4mm pitch ballscrew with thrust bearing end mounts, 267 oz/in
step motor
A-Axis: 3" chuck coupled to a Hi-T Drive harmonic drive system delivering
a resolution of 0.0029 degree per microstep.
B-axis: 45 degree tilt manual at the moment but automation ready
C-Axis: up to 10 degrees of swivel. Manual at the moment but automation
ready.

Capabilities:
1. Inlay part cutting
2. 4D Inlay cavity cutting
3. Simultaneous 2 butts tapering *compound taper capable
4. Simultaneous 2 shafts tapering
5. Ring billet making (inlay and cavity) *any number of divisions
6. V-groove cutting *any number of points
7. Folded veneer mitreing
8. Point stock prepping for perfect 90 degree angles
9. long axis and wrap-around engraving or scrim with proper spindle
replacement.
10. in-line or wrap-around 3d carving

Future add-on capability (under development):
1. Internal and external thread grinding
2. Main and A-joint bolt hole boring.
3. Clear-coat application.
