Bandsaw Blades

I have a 14 inch bandsaw that is an older unit but it has decent wheels and has bearings to support the blade. Can you guys recommend a suitable blade for cuttingh hardwood? I am a little confused about the amount of teeth per inch and width of the blade. I am looking at a 1/2 inch X 3tpi 93 1/2 inch blade now but im not sure how smooth that will cut. Seems to me like it will rip the wood more that cut. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi I have a 14" Jet and I have my blades custom made (about 16 dollars ) 14-16 tpi, and love the cut. If I get into really hard stuff I have to go easy, or to much heat. Jim

more tpi = smoother cut.
more blade width(1/2", 3/4" 1") = less drift on the cut.

The rule of thumb for band saw blades is that you need at least three teeth in the material at all times. The fewer the teeth the faster the cut but not as smooth. 14 inch band saws are usually limited to 1/2 inch or less blades because of there light construction. I have three band saws set up for different cutting needs. One is set up for accurately resawing inlay material, one just for quickly cutting off wood and phenolics and one for other precision cuts. I've tried many different brands of blades and now use Timberwolf blades exclusively. They will tell you what blade you need and their blades cut straight and last a long time. This is their web site:

Dick , have you tried the variable pitched blade?
They work quite well and because the tpi varies on the blade does not get into a harmonic.

No, not on my band saw. I have one on my table saw though.

Thing is, a 1/2 inch or the very most a 5/8 blade is all that can be tensioned on a 14 inch band saw. Their price is about 10 fold higher than other good ones also but of coarse that probably wouldn't be the case if the size was a 1/2 inch instead of the re-saw size.

Two of my band saws are the cheap Taiwan versions of the 14" Delta. They both work very well and accurate but I did have to do a lot of tuning to get them this accurate.
