Banks 201

I have long thought that if the
cue ball kicked into the object ball, object ball then banks into a pocket, that should be a bank shot!
way harder than just banking the object ball.

I don't play banks. I shoot them but I'll only play for the easy ones that fit the pattern. The game? Forget it. What's the average accustats on banks? Maybe they should loosen up the rules. For instance; opposing players could negotiate the terms of an out of spec shot. IOW come to wagers on specific shots.

No way! That would introduce bs into a game that doesn’t have it. It’s the only nit free game.

It's also the only game where pros dog everything. Why shackle them? They clearly aren't up to it. Short rack no less... I agree if you start adding side action you open the door for trouble but still, allowing a tricky kick as long as both parties come to a wager would certainly liven it up. As it is it's like biker pool scaled for champs :D

If you're trying to maximize your abilities then you should be playing banks, and rotation, and 1P, and 14.1, etc.

As far as changing the rules, I am against it. I've been playing banks (short rack) this way since the early 90's. Between two random guys, have it, change the rules all you want but at the pro-level don't change it.

And I love the part about pro's dogging everything, I get tired of watching people run racks, I like to watch people that are better than me learn the struggle is real :)

The second one meaning off the left side nipple and into right same side corner? I deleted that one because I didn’t really know how to explain it. The no kicks rule kind of sucks. That is still a clean shot. And actually all those rules suck a bit. A bank is a bank if it banks after contacting another ball. 😂
Thank you for the help.
A friend was playing 1 hole for $100 a game. He told his opponent he was on 2 fouls. Opponent said he didn't play 3 fouls ( which is in the rules forever ). My friend said 'if you change the rules enough, we'll be playing ping-pong' !!
That is one of my all time pool statements along with Buddy Hall's statement when playing Richie Florence at Weenie Beenie's room in the 70's. Richie remarked to Buddy, 'you know these pockets are tight don't you?' To which Buddy looked at Richie and said, 'the middle of the pocket ain't tight' !!! Love pool !

The way I look at it is struggling is for tools. Pool is pretty simple to figure out until jocks get a hold of it. Then it becomes a complex equation of not losing while trying to win. Sports is a technical problem. All through the ranks it's more skill, more skill until the lifestyle makes learning too much of a bother? I'm not near up to player so I stick with the learning.

Are kick banks and carom banks legal/legitimate if you call them? They’re legal when I play with friends. I watched a couple pro games and they were available, but no one attempted any. So I was just wondering.

I haven't read all the replies, so this is likely to be redundant, but in a typical bank pool ring game three rail kicks are allowed.

Never seen bank action except for the DC example. In casual encounters with real players, no kicks of any kind were allowed. I think kicks should be allowed but so should kisses and caroms per the other conditions of "a bank shot". This unfortunately should include "biker criteria" to keep the skill level copacetic.

I'm on the opposite side of that, I don't think any kicks should be allowed. Want to play kicks, go play kick-safe ;) (it's a much more fun game anyways)

Well, I'm still on easy, dead ish banks so I just can't see the relevance of legit bank pool.

That's actually the best time to start studying and practicing so you get a good base to work on.

One of the things I love doing at home is taking one OB and whitey and just sit there and hit the OB around the table. Sometimes I kick, bank, sharp cuts, constant attempts at 2, 3, 4, or more rails, short rail kicks, long rail kicks, etc. I have drop pockets so when I make it I just grab another ball and throw it on the table and get down and shoot.

You name it, I'm messing with it, one could call it "hero" practice but in reality I'm teaching myself how to think outside the box when hooked or when I need to hit a ball. Doing this has given me enough confidence in my kicking ability that I almost chuckle when people to play safe on me.

One other thing I cannot stress enough is spend some time focusing on three rail shots. I've been practicing these since the late 80's and other than learning the intricacies of the tangent line I can almost guarantee knowing how to go 3 rails around the table is going to increase your banking skill tremendously. If you think about it, a 4 rail shot is simply an extended 3 railer, and a 2 railer is a shortened 3 railer - except 2 and 4 railers are harder to practice if you're not familiar with the angles yet but with a 3 rail (corner to corner) you can establish a "base" feel for the table and then progress from there.

Grab the CB put it in a corner and shoot the typical three rail corner to corner shot using running English (top-left if going clockwise around table). Then on the next try hit the first rail an inch further down and see what happens (all else being equal it will come up long). Now, take that information and instead of pocketing the CB start trying to hit the rail 1", 2", 3" etc. from the pocket as if you're trying to hit a ball up the rail from the pocket.

From there you can expand into speed control, affects from English, start adding and reducing rails (to focus on 2, 4, 5, etc rails).

Get proficient at 3 rail's and ALL other aspects of your banking/kicking will improve.
