Bar leauge problems: The ONLY solution.

You want to change everything? Here is the one solution. MONEY. Have as much of a handicapped system as you want, the more games you win, the more money you win its that simple, and you might get bonuses for a BnR. And have the higher rank you achieve the more money you get.
The APA is baisically like communism, if there is no motivation to do better, and couple that with the fact it can help you to do worse things will never change. The only way to reverse this (and I mean ONLY way) is to make doing better worth your while, and that my friends means money. Just like a poker tourney, have the funds from the sign ups/monthly dues or whatever, go into a kitty for the players. Problem solved.
 
I play in a league that doesn't have handicaps. You just play to win. I like it a lot. Everyone tries thier hardest and it shows.

Yeah I do too, but its a banger leauge, this format would bring out good players.
 
Hard to have money for players when the dang gumb reps are filling their pockets and doing little to keep things honest.

I play in a handicapped league, but everyone tries hard. There is no sandbagging. I don't know why this is, but the mentality is that everyone wants to get the respect that comes with a higher rating.

What is great is that last year I didn't play at all and this year, players that were not that good before I left, now show a very marked improvement.

Far different from the leagues I used to play in where you had a ton of career 4s and 5s. I mean like for 15-20 years.

Our local bar league is pretty good...

26 weeks of play.
No handicaps.
The more games you win the more you make. You get a point for every win, every win is worth $1.
Person with the most B n R's for the season gets a $25 bonus.
Person with the most Rack and Runs for the season gets a $25 bonus.
Person with the most 6-0's (6 man league) for the season gets a $25 bonus.
Person with the highest winning percentage for the season gets a $100 bonus. 2nd $75 3rd $50
Plus a $100 sportsmanship award.

We have many BCA Masters players in the league. Hell, we even have some BCA Masters Champions in the league.

Plus, you get a free meal at every place you play, we play Sunday afternoons.

Plus, the Team payout is very healthy as well, first will pay in the $1400 range, 2nd around $1100, 3rd around $900 etc...

The bars have an auction to win the right to host the final tournament, this money is added to the final tournament prize fund.

And the cost for all this.................................$7 a week.

I run a league where we play 5 games a night. The way we handicap it is to divide the number of points you score divided by the number of games you play. It's a 3 man league, each player puts up $5 a week and each bar owner has to put up $5 for each team playing out of there. We normally have consistently 15 or 16 teams. We pay out every place. Last normally gets like 15 bucks. 7th is normally our break even point. 1st place as a team normally gets around 800 for a 16 week session. Also for individually, we pay out 300 for 1st, 200 for 2nd and 100 for third. Normally that alone will keep MOST players from sandbagging.

More money for better play, is a concept that I believe in...

The structure of the leagues mentioned sound real nice.

WOW! I wish I lived out there! I would join in an instant.

I currently play in an APA bar league, I am ranked a 7. I do not mind having a high handicap, untill I come across a 5 who plays dead even or better and I have to spot him games. I can't stand the sandbagging.

Last week I played a brand new player who wasn't even listed on the roster. He was written in as a 5. So the race is 5-3. He wins the first in 1 inning, I win the second in 1 inning. The next game goes to 4 innings with prob 3 safes, he wins. The score is 2-1 for him and now he needs 1 more game to my needing to win the next four straight. The next game comes down to him shooting the eight with me having one ball left. He misses the eight, I make my last ball, but don't get great shape on my eight. I miss my eight and pretty much sell out. He gets up and misses AGAIN. By now I know he is TRYING to lose this game and pad his innings. I decided to just lag up th eight right up in the hole and dare him to miss this one. I do not remember the last time someone tried to pad innings against me, it really kinda irritated me. I am a 7 so am usually playing pretty good players who are trying to win, so this caught me off gaurd. I just made sure that all the safties were marked and made sure that he won the last game that he should have won if was really trying to. He will be at least a 6 next week.

I never could understand all of the players who brag about being a 4 for playing in the league for ten years. My usual response is " well, you wasted a lot of time and a lot of money, then". To play in an organized league at least once a week for years, you should be at least a 5 i would think. They are bragging about manipulating the system. Basically you are running around and telling everyone you are a cheat, and want to be congratulated for it. If you were really half as good as you think you are, why don't you step up and play the game with an accurate handicap and see what happens? I mean who is impressed with getting a spot from an equal or lessor player and winning? I got a 5 game spot from my ten year old neice who can't run 3 balls, and I kicked her butt! I don't see why this is somethng to be proud of.

Granted the system is flawed to allow this to happen. But if everyone was honest, it would work properly.

I can answer any questions you have, not sure what else to post up. If you are interested in creating a mirror image of our league I can put you in contact with the league operator, I am sure he wouldn't mind.
