Bar room rules. HaHa

Ive came across all the strange "house" rules in bars, the worst was.
at the same "biker" bar no less......
Cant touch an opponents ball with O.B or Qball, anytime, not in combos ,kisses or caroms or inccedental contact.
Have to call object ball "touch the rail" or "clean" , includes O.B.touching a pocket point or the inside rail of pocket.
Also dont even think of playing safe....That was ...well....to put it in a better , less derogatory term then they used......."unsportsman like".
And if i remember correctly ,(been 20years) if your on the 8 ball and were not , they would say at the last second "Bank the 8!" after getting straight in on it

Rules designed for arguments to happen.:speechless:

Think it would be fun to try playing like that. Different game, different skill set.
I hate to sound like "that guy" but being in a rough area does fix some things. Intentionally scratching because someone's balls are behind the string may not be a foul, but if you may get the crap beat out of you in the parking lot for doing it, then it keeps people "honest." Am I not talking about gambling. Just putting quarters up.

I don't really play in those bars any more, but they have their place. Sometimes the "rules" of the game include the "rules" of the soceity you're in.
In a lot of bars in rough areas your not supposed to play safe at all. That would be "chicken shit pool," or other names I won't list. Sure the game "rules" don't say you can't play safe, but they don't also say you can't beat the crap out of a guy, and try to shove his face in the side pocket. No one ever asked for a rule book...

Here nobody will beat me up, and I can play safe as much as I want. Still, when playing with friends, we like to keep things fun and fair. There are players who like playing with intentional scratching fully allowed and I have no problem with that. We actually don't really use that "failing to touch the 8 3 times in a row is a loss" rule, my mistake. You only lose if you scratch 3 times in a row without touching the black. Try the game if you want, it sure is very tactical and exciting :)

Shooting from the kitchen after a scratch is total BS. It allows Dbags to scratch on purpose and gain an advantage. No thanks. I would rather just not play at that point.

"real rules" lol...wait until you hear what everyone's version of "straight 8" rules are. :grin-square:

Yeah, I realized it wasn't the best thing to include that paragraph in the response to your post. I was speaking more of the general thread. Also taking note of what you said, that there is an unspoken expectation of honesty.

Rules

Bar rules are terrible if you really want to play a serious game.

If you are just fooling around then I guess it doesn't really matter.

There are a couple of bars near me with table(s), one a block away. Every so often I get an urge to go there and see what a B+ player would do to the regulars. I have NEVER played on a bar table against regular bar players, just out of curiosity I want to go and play.

Then I read threads like this and the urge to go play in a bar goes away and I head to Snookers instead to get my butt handed to me by A and A+ players there. It's better that way I think.

I enjoy 8 ball and play it on the 9 footers whenever i can. I dont go into bars anymore and i dont miss it at all, saw too many beefs over non sense, especially over dumb rules, but mainly because the fire water was getting the best of the natives.

If i want aggravation, i can stay home and get all i can stand, why go out for it ? :groucho:

Don't worry, I understood that you meant bar pool in general, I only said we don't often have such troubles here ;)

I call bar rules 8 ball " argument pool ". Its a good game for drunks that want to fight. A good player going into one of the bars in my area to play " bar rules " 8 ball is asking for trouble.

If you play with friends and choose your opponents wisely, you can have some great games without putting anything or anyone at risk.
