Bar table leagues suck

I can't believe I joined a league! After league matches were over, I mentioned a cheap ring game and the room was empty in 5 minutes. It's no wonder the card rooms are full and the pool rooms are empty. Leagues are nothing but a marketing tool and a cash cow for operators. It will be a sad day when real pool rooms with real pool tables are gone. Does anyone feel the same?

Want a hug!

The same idiot who wouldn't play for $20 sets will happily buy $40 worth of lottery tickets or blow $200 at a casino.

Are you single ? Remember , for some making time to play they are taking time away from family . Got to get up for work early tomorrow ? Whole host of reasons . Maybe some joined the league to please someone else.

When i was in my 20's and single i played on 2 slow pitch softball teams . Never could figure out why some couldn't stay after practice or games and drink beer:).

Leagues were new to me in the mid 80's , didn't see the appeal unless they were all singles matches or rating players for handicap. I'm not a great player but if i play a tournament i don't want somebody giving me games.

I either need to step up my game or just enjoy playing pool and the social aspects of playing in the tournament .

Some of us don't give a shit about gambling. Most of the knuckle heads who want to gamble all the time don't have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of. In fact I look at must of the guys who were good players gambling all the time still as broke as they were 20 years a go. The reason why I have a house..bmw.. play with a high end timmy scruggs. Go on multiple trips and cruises every year and have a savings is because I don't waste my money gambling with numb skulls. I get all the competition I need out of leagues and tournaments. You don't like leagues don't play in them..leave the rest of us alone.

and the difference in skill doesn't bother you? i've seen a lot of players in the short time that i've been playing and the players that gamble always seem to play way better than the players that play for fun

I play in leagues and when the mood strikes I go to the pool hall match up and usually win.

i'm not saying all guys that play in leagues are slouches. and if you look at what i said you're more one of the gamblers than the fun playing league player anyway.

Its hilarious. First post, and this guy supposedly joined the pool league just to get action. You want action, figure out how good your game is, and call someone out.

Step by step guide to action:

1) Go to the nearest pool room
2) Walk up to the counter/bartender/owner
3) tell em your lookin for a game
4) BAM! action will slap you in the face.

Anymore questions...see the action forum and post for a game.

That's not what he said. he said after it was all done he tried to get a cheap ring game going.

he never said he only joined to get into action. everyone's real quick to jump on this guys caes but he makes a pretty good point. pool's getting over run with people who don't take the time to play the game right because they never play it for anything

i'm a fan of bar leagues myself but i can see where he's coming from. there were always a few people that i could match up with when i was playing

I take a slight offense at that statement. By that reasoning, the only people who should be allowed are those who are willing to gamble.

I call bullspit.

You may play to gamble, and that's cool. But the fact that I don't wish to gamble shouldn't mean that I can't play the game, or (eventually) play it "right".

Sorry to "run over" your game.

Not another league bashing thread!

Wow, another league bashing thread.. These are becoming as common as the CTE threads of yesterday..

NO, I am definatly a league player, but I get the bug to gamble occasionatly, and I hold my own. Point is I know where to gamble when I want to.

Well said!

It is funny that often times the folks that can least afford to gamble are the ones wanting
to gamble & the ones that can easily "afford" to have no interest.

If the room was empty in 5 minutes there's a good chance that you weren't playing in a pool hall, but a bar with a bar table(s) in it. In a pool hall you wouldn't have a problem with this....league night or not.

You are right on here.

Where I play, after league ends you can find 7 or 8 of the top end players that hang around and play sets for $50 or $100. Those are also the guys that either don't have full time jobs and don't have a wife and kids.

Sometimes I'd swear posts like this are started JUST to get a 'league-bashing' debate going...

FWIW, I've got a wife, three kids, two dogs and a mortgage. I play in leagues to get a 'night out' and maybe play my way to the nationals in Las Vegas. Depending on how late the matches are finished is going to determine if I stick around for action or not.

And if I need to, I know where to find some gamblers, too.

joe76195, if you don't like the league you're in, then don't play. It's that simple. If you want action, go down to the poolhall and put a c-note on the rail.

Come join our Thursday Night League. You won't have any of those problems.

Not all leagues are the same....SPF=randyg

Rep for you.

I'd offer an opinion here but since I won't gamble I apparently know little, if anything, about pool. Geez, I am ever a newb!

Leagues are nothing but a marketing tool and a cash cow for operators.

A lot of leagues are run by volunteers who do it with little or no thanks.

Just because you couldn't make a game with people who had wives and families to go home too doesn't take the value out of playing in a league.

People ripping on leagues should stop and think about what they themselves are doing for pool.

Really. WTF are you doing for pool?

Leagues provide a venue for people to be competative and grow thier skills. What do you provide? negativity?
