Bast lathe for shaft repair

Hello gents,

I am looking for a small lathe to do some basic shaft work [retips, cleaning, and sealing for example]. In my area, there is only one guy who has a setup to do any shaft work and he is barely ever available. The closest cuemaker or houseman to do this type of work is an hour away by car. I would like to set something up next to my workbench because I like to try new tips out frequently. Are there any recommendations on this kind of lathe?

Thanks for any help!
Patrick

Call hightower, good quality , and good service too. He will answer all your question that you need to know. Get the mid size for repair only.

There are a lot of options, but if you're looking for something turn-key I'd suggest getting in touch with Todd Schultz (AZB sn: tsp&b). He has nice offerings at reasonable prices.

Turn-key would be great if it were used. I will pester him.

I know a few guys using Hightower lathes and have great things to say. I'll look at the options with him.

Call Chris Hightower, tell him what you need and trust him to set you up. He's as honest as they come and won't try to milk you. He is also top of the list in the customer service department!!! When your package arrives it will be ready to work.

lathe

I recently purchased a lathe from Todd..It functions very well does what it was advertised to do and then some..in so far as Todd I asked him alot of questions before the purchase, during and after. He always responded in a timely manner. I am very happy and would refer Todd to anyone who is looking for a lathe. Check him out here...http://www.midamericapool.com/index.htm

I've had a mid size Hightower when I did repairs only and a Deluxe Hightower now , you can't go wrong with Chris or his service. If you need any support he is ready and more than able to answer your questions.

A lot of people come on the forum asking a similar question to this one.

Just one thing I would mention .... Some people think they can Cobb together a wood lathe or another lathe and do what they want to easily.....

You end up spending more time and money trying to make something else work..... buy a turnkey unit

That is absolutely my plan. I have cobbled together enough in my life, I'd rather just find a nice used lathe with a meaty headstock and get cracking. If I have to go new, so be it, but I'd rather save a little cash, I am not building cues.

if you are not building cues get the midsize lathe with a big spindle hole...You are good to go from tip and ferrule replacement, cleaning , refinishing , and re wrapping..... You name it got it.....Don't waste your time from thinking. Thats what i have......

+1 For Todd

+10 for Todd !!!! He will go WAY BEYOND your expectations in the customer service department and has the best prices around. He personally pulled my ass out a bind yesterday, ON THE PHONE, and never asked for a penny, and I easily wasted a couple of hours of his time yesterday. I can't speak highly enough of Todd, his products, and his personal service.
