Dont know where in the bay you'll be and how upscale but-

CA Billiard Club is in Mtn View (closer to San Jose vs. San Francisco)

Broken Rack - in Emeryville (just across the bay bridge near Berkley)

Family Billiards - in San Francisco on Geary Street (3 blocks past the Kaiser Hospital)

Crown Billiards - San Ramon (east bay)

www.shorelinebilliards.com in Mountain View
B-Street Billiards in San Mateo is OK, but certainly not a players room. Buffalo Billiards in Cotati. There's a sports-barrish nice room in Napa (Billco's?). You may find google maps useful for locations -- just zoom in on the area and search on "billiards".

Sorry Bob, but Buffalo Billiards and "upscale" pool room should never be mentioned together. If you like crappy big pocketed tables, that are all different, each with its own unique flaws... or if you want to improve your confidence; then I recommend coming Saturdays for thier open 9ball tourny $10 entry starts at 2:00pm; otherwise this place should be avoided like the plague!

Best rooms in Bay Area would have to be:
1. Family Billiards (SF)
2. California Billiard Club (MV)
3. Broken Rack (Olhausen tables, big pockets, but consistant play from table to table, and plenty of one pocket)

I guess I have a different definition of "upscale," mine being somewhere it would be OK to take your mom to show her what pool was all about, assuming your mom doesn't chain-smoke Cuban cigars and drink from a large flask she keeps in her purse. Chalker's was upscale, Cochran's was not. Chalker's served roasted goat-cheese appetizers, Cochran's just smelled like goat. I would much rather play and spectate in Cochran's, but it's gone. Too many knifings and shootings over the years.
