Hey,
Interesting point...
Why was not the new phenolic tip policy enforced?
I saw quite a few players if not most of them breaking with phenolic tips and that policy was not enforced? WTF?

PM Mark Griffin. He is the man, or Bill Stock BCA Chief Referee who could answer that!

Bruce...
I know them well...
I think that a public explanation is needed. I guess no ball showed damage this year due to the non-use of G10 based tips.

I'm sure the refs weren't going to check for phenolic tips unless an opposing player called attention to it. Most people I saw did what I did, change out the phenolic to a legal hard leather tip.

for that matter... it's hard for an opponent to spot it and point it out (though maybe the sound gives it away?) ...how do you know you were seeing phenolics rather than hard leathers?

Well I think BCA made people feel if they did not comply, they would be DQed. They are either going to enforce the NEW RULE 100%, or just not have it.

IMHO the Rule is not needed. Maybe someone should ask the BCA to hire an EXPERT, and see if it is the Tips, or Cue Balls hitting the O/B at FAST SPEED causing the problems aka Damaged Cue Balls.

Another reason I choose long ago to not play in a BCAPL League. I like my Ice Breaker Tips from Tiger Products. BTW my Personal Pool Ball Set has suffered no damage from the Ice Breaker TIP!

In our first match we played a Canadien team. One of their team had a phenolic tip on his break cue, we heard it the first time he broke. We just let them know about the policy of the BCA and he stopped using it. We never had to get the referee involved, so I'm not sure if they were enforcing it or not. We took care of it on our own.
Another team we played, they were from Texas, took a close look at my J-J jump/break. I had the phenolic removed months ago and replaced with a very hard leather tip.
I'm not sure if the referees were enforcing the new rule, but other players were aware of the rule and not letting anybody use them. Nobody wanted to get there game disqualified because of using an illegal tip, so if it was brought to their attention they would stop using it. This is just what I observed.

I played a BCA ref from Oregon and he had a phenolic tip and i warned him about it and he still used it! I called a foul on his second break and another ref came over and awarded me ball in hand.

wow...jumping on a guy for knowing and asking for a rule (one that was a HUGE deal when it was put into effect - so, most BCA players knew about it) to be enforced. LOL Which is the typical LEAGUE behavior?? Someone complaining that someone else isn't following league rules, or those who complain about the rules they THINK are silly, or stupid??

There are PLENTY of rules or stipulations in other sports that may seem stupid to some - for example, I have a buddy that buys softball bats that are BANNED by the governing body of his league/tourneys he plays in.....he paints them, and puts on decals of "legal" bats. LOL. Then there are the guys who will play golf clubs that exceed the C.O.R. limit...knowingly (these are the same guys that may just have a couple of clubs over the 14 limit too). Limits, and rules, regardless of how STUPID you think they are; are put in place, and if you choose not to follow them, someone may point out that you are.....DARN; but it was your choice.

BTW, if you didn't know the rule...no biggie, you most likely would have just been asked not to use a cue with a phenolic tip. But c'mon, the ones complaining the rule is STUPID know the rule is there....break with something else.

Yes this is classic...typical league behavior so complain about a petty tip rule thats stupid anyway

Uh, we are talking about the BCA National Championships, right? Not a weekly "league" match, right?

Seems pretty simple to me, and the ref who knowingly broke the rule (ESPECIALLY after being called on it) shouldn't be allowed to ref any longer. His integrity is in question. I wouldn't want him making decisions on my match, I can tell you... Call that "petty" if you like, but those who are supposed to enforce the rules darned sure better play by them!

That sound like BS. A Referee who breaks the rules he is charge with enforcing.:(

Enforcement

The policy was enforced. With all the players and cues and noise...it was virtually impossible to check each and every break cue.

It was decided that if a player called a ref to the table to challenge a cue tip, the policy was as follows:

The match would continue while the referee had the stick looked at by one of several people that are in the cue repair business...to include Joe Blackburn.

If it was ruled to be phenolic, the player was given a warning, it was annotated on the score sheet for an equipment violation and the player was told he could not use that cue anymore.

The fact that many matches were played with them can be attributed to; players not knowing what a phenolic tip is, players not caring what their opponent uses or maybe even players not liking the rule and thus accepted their opponent using that tip??

Florida Seminole Hard Rock State Tournament a week or so ago no G 10 Tip rules were enforced to my knowledge. But the Seminole have always been known to run a very Loose Ship. The Rules are only for Non Seminoles.

I went to grade school, with Seminole's they were the only Tribe who never sign a Peace Treaty with the U.S. Government. Reason is they always kick the U.S. Soldiers butts.

Tap, tap, tap...

Is the phenolic only banned for breaking ? Can you use it on a jump stick ?
