Obviously he's doing something right to still be in the mix. But, you have to say that he's in it because of his 8-ball play. The break is just one piece. Charley Bryant didn't get very far (though his bracket hosed him). The break is only one part of the equation. The ability to navigate the runout IMO is much more important.

Larry's break is so powerful, people sometimes forget that the guy has a great game to go with that great break. Our paths have crossed over the last yr and we've got some mutual friends so I've gotten to know him a little this past yr.... He's a pretty nice guy... quiet, especially for his size, and a phenomenal stoke. While I haven't seen it, I've been told that he can draw the cue ball the length of the table... one handed.
I'm definitely pulling for him!

I witnessed Larry put a cueball frozen on the rail and the object ball 6 inches in front of the pocket, jacked up and drew it all the way to the end rail where the cueball rest. Amazing stroke indeed. He is very nice guy too. I got to know him when he used to live with Jimmy Reeves in Easley, SC.
I also watched him play in 2005 Carolina Open, OMG, HARD ASS BREAK!!!
Absolutely, Larry's got the whole package to go along with his monster stroke and break.
And can he see/execute ball running patterns ?....Well, he's run 200-300 balls in straight pool....And his 1pocket game is under-rated by many people....I've played Larry a fair amount of 1pocket and on the "rating the worlds best 1pocket players" AzBilliards thread that was up several months ago, I rated Larry tied for third best in the world - imo only Efren and Cliff are better....about 7 years ago he lived in Chicago for a year or two and picked up a ton of 1pocket knowledge to go with his superior all-around pool skills. Along with his power game he's a tremendous shot-maker and like Cliff, he's got a beautiful soft delicate stroke when needed. The only question with Larry used to be whether he had a strong enough mental game and seasoning to play with the champions - well, so far in this IPT tournament it looks like maybe now he does.

Great Stroke but Not the Best I Have Seen.
I remember one year in Olathe during a tournament, they used to have a 5 x 10 Snooker table there. Jon Kucharo got into a stroke contest with Larry where they would pocket a ball in the corner & then draw their cue ball back. Everyone in the building wanted to bet on Larry, most had seen him do shots like the jacked up draw shot off the end rail as another poster described. Whitey Walker pulled me aside & told me to empty out on Kucharo. I looked at him like he was crazy but he said told me it was a sure bet, so I did. Kucharo robbed Nevel at this every time. He would draw the cue back to the end rail and then back past the side pocket. The last bet between them, Kucharo grabbed a one piece house cue off the wall & still beat him.
I also saw, on this same table, Ron Wiseman play David Gomez 6-ball, $100 a ball and if you broke & ran out, the bets paid double. Ronnie put a 6-pack on him to make him quit.
Best of luck to Larry. He is a great player, has lots of heart and is AMERICAN!

I saw Larry Nevel for the first time playing in the Smokey Mountain Shootout this April. It was clear enough to me then that this guy had the whole package. He does everything well.
I asked Larry between matches if he would be playing in the IPT. He told me he would be entering a qualifier next month. I wished him luck with it, and he proceded to win the SMS tournament as the day wore on.
A month later, I saw him win the SC 9-ball Championship in Spartanburg, SC, beating Shannon Daulton in the final. A couple of weeks later he won an IPT qualifier.

With two hands, he was drawing the cueball all the way back, down to the foot rail, and back halfway up the table.

If he has a great break then he sure does have a chance, as Fred says you still gotta run out but at this level they all probably can (or there's something wrong!).Bottom line is if you don't make a ball it doesn't matter who you are you aint gonna run out much from your chair!

I thank Whitey for being smarter than the rest of the room that day. I am not a computer person so I can't draw a diagram. If memory serves me correct, they put the cue ball at mid table and the object ball half way to the pocket. Fred is correct (I dont know if I explained it right the first time to give the correct image), they both drew the cue ball back to the top rail then down to the bottom rail and Kucharo always got past the side again. I would say this was at least 7 years ago if not more. I don't know who would win such a competition now but I got extra money from that day to put on Kucharo. Seeing is believing and I was impressed.
I think he's in trouble just like Busta-"move"

Alex was the only one who did it consistently. I have watched Jon and Larry do some incredible stroke shots though. I'd actually like to see areal competition like that.
None of the silly trick shots. Just pure stroke shots. I think that would be pretty cool tv.
