Becoming an "official" instructor

Hi everyone,

if I'd like to become a certified instructor, what do you recommend?
Are there different body of certifications? What are the high level requirements?

Once you get certified, do you have training material?

Any place to buy some of the training material?

Thanks

The PBIA program (http://playbetterbilliards.com/) has been around for about 20 years. It was formerly the Billiard Congress of America (BCA) Instructors' Program. The different levels of training/certification for instructors is explained on the site. Whether you get training material depends on the person or academy that certifies you.

An outline of the first-level certifications that I do are in http://www.sfbilliards.com/richandout.pdf

The cost for certification training is somewhere around $700-$800 but this depends on the trainer and other conditions, such as location.

Bob is spot on. I would only add that any PBIA Master or Advanced instructor can certify new instructors. A complete list of instructors is also on the PBIA site.

PBIA is a good deal, especially since I know students who will not take lessons from people certified by other groups, since those groups are stringent in their teaching and will not teach outside the box.

From what I have seen and read its the PBIA instructors that wont teach outside the box. Its my understanding they all teach the same thing.

Am I in error?

Yes. Different PBIA instructors have very different approaches to instruction.

Well, a couple of years ago I had one PBIA instructor tell me if I got another PBIA instructor to help me that he would tell me the same thing.

I wonder if things have changed since August of 2007 when I took a lesson?

No, they haven't changed. But if the "same thing" was to work on your fundamentals, then he may well be right. There are some things that most instructors agree on. What was the "thing"?

I am sure it really wasn't one thing. I think it was basically that I'd get the same type of instruction. In other words, them there Mother Drills were going to catapult me to superstardom.

Do all PBIA instructors teach them there Mother Drills?

Mike...Only SPF instructors teach the Mother Drills. You will likely never improve for two reasons...1) you refuse to believe that your fundamentals suck (and you won't do the work to improve them); and 2) you NEVER go out to play anybody. 9 years since your lesson with me, and no improvement on your part. No instructor will be able to overcome your attitude.

Well, i didn't think there were any SPF instructors anymore? I thought they were PBIA instructors. I assume you are referring to those instructors that taught the SPF routine (you, Randy, etc) that are now part of the PBIA, correct? So, my question is, do current PBIA instructors teach the SPF and the Mother Drills?

And likely never improve? I am a whole lot better now than i was back in 2007. Not sure why you would say my fundamentals suck when you haven't seen me since 2007? And i wont do the work? Lets see, lessons from Tom Rossman, Diana Minor, Mark Wilson, Scott Lee, Nick Varner. I have all kinds of teaching aids. I buy Accu-Stat videos and watch them over and over including all the other tapes and DVDs i have. I still work on the simple things that each and every instructor has shown me, including you Scott. To say i wont do the work and that my attitude is bad is simply flat out wrong.

And yes, you are correct in that competition is something i lack. There's not a lot of options around SW Indiana. My two guys that i used to play with both passed away of cancer years ago and that has left a void. Especially since one of them was an outstanding player that played in some pro tournaments.

p.s. Earlier this morning i was stroking some shots with Tom Simpson's stroke trainer. Shame on me for doing something like that. Just shows i don't put in the time and my attitude is bad.

MIKE

There are about 220 PBIA Instructors of all levels. 180 of them teach the SPF stroke method.

Randy,
Can you send me a list of the 40 that do NOT teach SPF and the Mother Drills? If any are in my area I might try and get with them.

No I won't, Mike.

Go to the website and select a few to call and ask them what and how they teach.

Good luck

I've taken lessons from both Randy and Scott and ah, another guy you seem to know. I think there's a reason these two are recommended so much and others are never named.

Hey, just sayin'
