Interesting. At about the 2:18-2:25 mark there is a picture of two older men, the one on the right is Marv Goodman I think. I think I stayed at his house once in the early or mid 70s. Great shot.

Very interesting and cool project.
The Bensinger family more or less took over the Brunswick company in the late 1800s and owned the majority of the nice pool halls in Chicago at the time. However, that heyday came and went and billiards/pool across the nation suffered a great deal of degradation, leaving us with the final Bensingers location of this photo shoot, which was much less than desirable from the publics standpoint.

And from the standpoint of carom players there was not one decent place left in the entire city of Chicago, THE city of carom billiards, which was a crying shame, which lead directly to the founding of the Illinois Billiard Club.

I fully support the book project and the preservation of the images obtained therein, but I have mixed feelings about the Bensinger family establishments and their role in our history.

Nonetheless I wish them nothing but success. I hope to see it soon.

They responded to the question about how much money they are raising. Here is what they said:

Kickstarter staff pick and a word about our budget.

We are off to a great start, thank you to everyone who has supported the project so far! We have heard from so many people who have a Bensiger's connection, either they played there or they practically grew up there watching friends or loved ones play there. It is great to see so many people who have the same passion about Bensinger's as Helaine does! Please continue to help us by spreading the word and keep the momentum going.*

Today we were featured as a*Kickstarter staff pick! This is great news to help us reach a wider audience.

We know that raising $25,000 is pretty ambitious and is a lot of money! We are confident that we can reach this goal by getting the word out to as many people as possible. Every single contribution (big or small) counts and is so important to us.*

Here is a little breakdown, to help anyone who is wondering, where this money will go. Straight out of the gate Kickstarter and Amazon (payment processor) each take 5% so there goes*$2,500*right off the top. Our biggest expense is the printing and binding. The book will be offset printed and hardbound by*Oddi Printing*in Iceland, which will cost approximately*$12,000-$15,000*for 1,0000 copies. The final cost will depend on the quality of paper we use, and how fancy we get with the final cover design. We want this book to be beautiful and offset printing is the way to go, especially for black and white images.

A few other costs:

Printing proof/match prints to send to the printer to reference during printing -*$500

Shipping the books from Iceland to Portland -*$1,000+

Final book design:*$500-$1,000

Mailing and supplies -*$500-$1,000

Producing the postcard set and prints to be included as Kickstarter rewards -*$500-$1,000

There are other little*nickel*and dime costs here and there that I won't mention, but this leaves us a few thousand dollars wiggle room to cover unexpected expenses, which there always are.

Thanks again for your support!

Why print in Iceland?

Support the USA.

For that reason...I'm out.
