best advice

Wow.... about a million hours of advice here already!! ;)

I'll chime in with a couple anyway....

Practice at the 'edge' of your ability, and visualize ALL of your shots before you shoot 'em.

Play for something everytime you play. Match up with better players getting weight. Practice every part of the game.

i agree...

Here are 4 very basic lessons I learned:

Lesson 1
I was told a long time ago to keep my ears open, my mouth shut. Most players can have their game jump a ball overnight by following that simple advice.

Lesson 2
I was also told that if I kept my heart 100% in the game or match, that winning would take care of itself. I found out that winning the match isn't the only way to win. Sometimes when you lose the match, you win something more precious than gold - they call it experience. Its what you do with that experience that makes you a winner or a loser.

Lesson 3
If you miss a shot or position, or if you lose a match, learn why and take appropriate action. Take that weakness and turn it into a strength and become a better player.

Lesson 4
Even the great players have bad days too. You only get to learn that lesson if you have the balls to show up, belly up, and put it all out there.

this is a very loaded advice right here!!! if i may add, try to be a gentleman and havo some HUMILITY...winning is great, but you can be proud and humble at the same time--efren i think is the perfect example.
I remember an incident from a while back. a B average player won a 3-1 set with a lot of bad rolls from the guy his playing. after that, right away he was looking for some money games, being loud and bragging he didn't didn't even break a sweat. one of the old timer tells him: "I wish I can buy you for what you're worth and sell you for what you think you are." i never forgot that!

My Convictions

This really sounds like you and your philosophy need to mature. You HAVE to play better players so long that it takes away your heart. If you never learn to overcome losing hope, you will always be losing hope.

A bad beat takes me minutes to get over.

This is one of the things that separates those who know how to play from those who know how to win. Make no mistake about it, winning is a skill that has to be learned.

Should I mature? perhaps, but I stand by my convictions, I'm 51 yrs. have been playing pool for 39 years, and have made a living at it 32 of them, 25 of which were on the road, I've never cheated or dumped a person out of a quarter.

Some pool players have heart, some don't, but the ones that do will Never Ever let someone take the heart they have from them, because they are winners!, you do have to learn to loose to become a winner.

You say a bad beat takes you minutes to get over, well good for You!

What is a bad beat to you? is it loosing by 4 games going 11, is it loosing the match hill/hill by choking on the money ball for the tournament win? or is it loosing by 30 games playing by the game?

The first scenario you may get over in a few minutes, the second takes alittle time , more for some & less for others, and the third scenario takes a good while, I don't care who you are!

You did make a great point though, winning is a skill that has to be learned!

Have a Great Day!
