Best Custom Break Jump Cuemakers

I would love to get some of your opinions on the cuemakers who build the best performing break jumps. I want something handcrafted with a leather tip (i'm NOT interested in phenolic tip cues). If you could tell me if you've used/hit with many break jumps, just a few or only one that would be really helpful. Please don't post saying I should get both a break and a jump cue if you can help it, that point is well taken however.

BTW, I did do a search and much of the threads consist of phenolic tipped bj cues, hence this post.

Thanks everyone!

I know A guy that shoots with a Layani (sp). He is good friends with the guy and had him make him a beautiful Break/Jump cue. He liked it better than his Sledgehammer. Not sure of the tip material though. Might be worth looking into. Hope this helps. Myself, I use an X-breaker. The tip is not phenolic and holds chalk well. I would recommend it highly.

Oh,,,,,,

4- which he could be ranked #1 also

Omen J/B but his comes with a Phenolic tip, but i know a guy who has one and replaced it with a Hard Moori tip for breaking, and it works just as good.

Contact RicK Howard, from Mace Custom cues. Ricks jump break cues have been used for years on the Pro-tour, and Rick uses only leather tips on his cues. You can find his number in the Blue Book of Cues, one of Ricks cues will sell new for $325 to $375 retail, but I recommend you buy from him directly so that the cue is customized to your taper on the shaft, and your required weight.

1.gilbert- (plays good as a players cue ,and jump and breaks well) about $350 to $500 price range.

2.omen- $300 to $375 price range(pretty break cue LOL also breaks well)

3.mace- $325 to $375 price range (solid break cue)

4.jacoby- $250-$400 price range (usally has a flat laminated shaft very stiff)

5.X-breaker - price keeps going up $350 to $400(does not have a leather tip thoe but holds chalk well .Not custom made but good quality)

Here are a quick 5 I like off the top of my head.Prices are pretty close as to what I have seen them cost new.:) :)

Stinger

No one has mentioned Stinger yet. They have a pretty good reputation. I would like to try one, someday.

You might check with Jerry Powers of Jerico Cues. When I saw him in Padre he told me he is now making an IPT Legal Jump/Break Cue. It basically has his Stinger technology, but uses a leather tip instead of Phenolic. I wanted to try one out, but all he had made were sold, so I just gotta wait! However, if it's ANYTHING like the normal stinger in performance, then it will be top notch.

Later,
Bob

John Parker of Auerbach Custom Cues makes great Cues. I just finished photographing one of his latest custom JUMP-BREAK cues, so he could give some pictures to his customer. John Parker always acccompanies his cues with a "Certificate of Authenticity", which has a great photo of the cue on it.

By the way this Break-Jump has some GLITZ on it... Ivory, Turquoise & Sterling Silver... it sold for $1200. It is a beauty & breaks the balls wide open & will jump a ball within a ball. His cues come with HARD MOORI's or Phenolic...

OMEN Grey Ghost B/J is awesome, the MACE is excellent too.

My best break cue was a mistake...

Mid-'90s I was talking with Pete Ohman about the cues he was making...and hitting balls with the sneaky pete he was playing with that day. This personal cue of his was 60".

He offered me a good price on a sneaky pete that I could use for a break cue...which I was looking for one. He asked if I wanted it just like his...in fact asked if I wanted to buy that one. I said yes, I would like one, but with a more standard 58".

Well at the next Florida Tour event Pete presented me with the cue and sure enough...it was 60". We had a small debate over it...and he agreed to cut it down to 58"...but since he thought that it was my mistake then he wouldn't cut both sections, but would cut the 2" off the shaft only.

Well that cue came back...and to this day I have never hit a break cue that absolutely blasted the way that cue did.

Unfortunately I only had it for a few weeks when it was stolen during a subsequent Florida Tour event. It was inside a Jack Justis case...with my name engraved on it...along with a fairly cheap McDermott shooting cue. (Anyone seen it???)

There might be a few morales to this story...but I still think that maybe Pete Ohman discovered something when he accidentally made a break cue that was just a bit back heavy...Cheers.

My Madison Bob J/B jumps increadibly well. The tip it has is not phenolic, but it isn't leather either, he said it's made from hemp or a hemp by-product I forget. I'm sure Bob would make one for you with leather.

Andy Gilbert - I have a shaft with a hard leather tip. On a sturdy table like a Diamond, jumping with it is about 90% compared to using the shaft with a phenolic tip. That is, it's about as good as any non-phenolic tipped Jump Cue. The weight and balance of it makes it very easy to play with.

Mike Gulyassy - Mike is now making an IPT-legal Sledgehammer. Mike is also a player member of the IPT tour.

Jerry Powers - Jerico is supposedly also coming out with an IPT-legal Stinger (not Sledgehammer, like I wrote previously).

Stinger, don't you mean, for that second bit?

I agree

I agree with this. Last year I had the stinger, a sledge for awhile, predator bk, omen and the mace. The stinger jumps really well but I did not like it for breaking. Everyone knows sledge.

The omen gets you a little more length in the jump handle and really has a good pop to it. The extra length really does help. The cue has cool ringwork. I would recommend curly maple/ebony. I got one in BEM. Pete is a nice guy and will build a great cue for you. Jumps great.

The mace is just solid- Rick will build you whatever you want. Tried and tested- there is a reason a lot of people have these.

To echo what a lot of others have been saying, Rick Howard's Mace is the best one I've hit with. A teammate of mine has one, and I've never tried jumping with it, but it breaks like a truck, and also actually has a nice feel as a playing cue as well. It's also very nice-looking, in a simple way.
