Expecting any different answer than Efren? For the big $, nobody has neared his feats.

I heard he has a button in his R) armpit- it has 2 settings, on/ off. At the table? On. Away from the table? Off.

I've polled several quite famous players. I assume you are speaking of 9-ball.

The top players I have spoken too have mentioned that Earl's top gear is/was the best ever. Several mentioned Efren and George Breedlove in tournament play (few players are as aggressive in short races).

P.S. - Those who attended the DCC IPT qualifier and missed the C.J. Wiley/Breedlove match should be whipped - those guys have a serious top gear.

Good topic. I agree with Willie about Earl; I've never heard anyone else mentioned as the "high gear champ". Through the years, when he's at the very top of his game, he may have played the best 9-ball ever seen. Some others that might play so-so and might play off the chain IMO, are Santos Sambajon, Nick Van Den Berg, Thomas Engert, Charlie Bryant and Rodney Morris. In recent years, I've seen Buddy Hall early in a tournement look pretty ordinary, then get tougher every day, then snap off the tournement, playing perfect 9-ball...don't ever underestimate Mr. Hall. In 1-pocket, maybe Cliff Joyner, but I'm going by some of the Accu-Stat matches where he struggled, then in others looked unbeatable. If I'm wrong about Cliff, please correct me 'cause I'm not sure I've seen enough of him to be on solid ground here.
As for Efren, I don't know how he fits in here. No question his high gear is off the chart, but his low gear ain't bad either. I almost think he just musters up his A-game when he needs it. At the 2004 DCC, I saw Efren really struggle in the bank tournement against a mediocre player, almost losing. So when Efren plays Shannon Daulton, I naturally bet a C-note on Shannon...Efren played like Eddie Taylor, wins the match, and I'll never bet against Efren again.

feel free to post your responses on any game.

Personally, I agree with you on Earl's top gear. The difference I see between Earl's high gear and some others that I've seen is - Earl makes everything look sooo easy it's disgusting.

When Earl hits his high gear in 9 ball and gets that break going nobody can stop him for long periods of time. It is a thing of beauty!

Ronnie Allen had a 6 speed with over drive playing 1pocket. I can't imagine scrapping out a game against him, then next rack you leave him the edge of a ball and he's 8 and out in 30 seconds. It must have been suffocating....

I also heard Allen Hopkins has a real high gear playing 1pocket, and you just can't get away from him with all that knowledge...

Earl Strickland has an unreal top gear. Also Buddy Hall in the early 80's, actually he was always in top gear!

.

From what I've heard, Shane from South Dakota has one of the best top gears, especially for being pretty young.

He's running six packs left and right, beat one of the best players in CA in 14 games for a ten ahead match.

I don't think anyone made it look easier than Earl or CJ though.

I'm going with Earl and CJ.

A friend of mine played CJ in the early 90's some cheap 9-ball on an 8-footer for like $10 a game and ended up going down 27 games. He was getting the 7, but it didn't matter what he was getting because he was so far out of his league.

CJ would run 8 racks, my friend would run 2. Then CJ would run 6 more and my friend would run 3.

Pretty soon you are down 27 games.

A few guys come to mind. First is Johnny Archer and can keep it there a long time. Mizerak's O/D was awesome...near flawless. Sigel, Strickland, Varner & Hall all had it too...was fun to watch to see who could conjur it up the quickest back 20yrs ago.
