Best hitting custom in the $300-$400 range?

Josey, Gilbert, Jensen, Morris, Shurtz, and Webb are some I would definitely consider in that range. Either sneaky style or plain hardwood nose (new) or a pointed cue (used). And if like the hit of a steel jointed cue, it's still hard to beat a Schon IMO....with the right tip.

good advise on the schon,forgot about a lot but imo you get a lot of cue for the cash and with the right tip and shaft taper its hard to find a better hitting cue.
 
Chuck Starkey just delivered a cue to me this week in that price range and I love it. It's got the 1/2"-8 wood pin and it hits real nice. The difference in feel between it and the 3/8-10 steel pin cue I was using is like the difference between a 2 piece fiberglass fishing rod and a one piece high-modulus graphite rod.

You can get a Predator for about $400 starting

Gene La Viness, of Crown Cues, makes basic cues in that price range. Most of them are wrapless, but he takes orders for cues with wraps. He doesn't have anything quite like you described, right now, but he's got a great selection of cues for sale on his website. The new cues page on his website is at http://www.crowncues.biz/new.html

i find that the pin and joint make the hit. just find someone respectable who can make you a cue to your specs with a 3/8 x 10 pin or a radial pin with a phenolic joint and you should be fine.

with that said, you should be looking at respectable new cuemakers.

bryan mordt and kenneth murrell come to mind.
 
Hang On And Cut The Crap Here, OK!?

A lot of cuemaker's names are being thrown around in here but I'm going to stop the presses right now and end the party. You have all failed to mention the quality cues put out by Minnesota Fats and Sportcraft. You might be hard pressed to hear anything negative about the smooth silky play you'll get with a "Minnesota". I just might have one in your price range buddy! I'll even throw in a Viper case!

I second that! Ryan does excellent work at a fair price. Great guy to work with and also very good looking. ;)

(send that darn cue you broke to me and I'll either fix it or build a new one)
 
Bob Frey sneeky. It is my current player and I like it a lot. A good soild cue which has certainly improved my game. I would buy another in a heart beat.
 
I haven't read all the other posts but if you want a nice cue get an Omen. You might have to stretch your $400 just a tad but you won't regret it one bit.
