Just curious as to what the majority on the board favors as for wood choice in looks on a cue.

Personally, I think Amboyna Burl with a some what bright lookin color after a finish is my favorite..

Then comes Rosewood, Tulip Wood, and Purple Heart in no order.. Of course Ebony is always in there along with a real nice Birds-Eye..

Some pieces of Cocobolo look great as well.. Snakewood is not bad but not my favorite over any of the others.. Unless it's a real nice piece.

There are others but these are what pop up in my mind right now. I just saw a real nice set of Amboyna JP's and that is why I made the thread.

Burl is nice looking, but I always gravitate, for some reason, to Mexican Bacote'. (not African Bacote) Another wood that can be nice looking too is Zebrawood, also Kingwood. I like Padauk too.

Snakewood is great for spears.

Coco what else!

I've had a few cocobolo wood cues.. Some pieces are amazing for looks.. I wish I had my old Hurricane 4 point wrapless break jump cue back..

It had 4 cocobolo points into a BEM forearm, BEM handle, Cocobolo butt sleeve..

Micarta checkered ring work, Steel joint 5/16-14 flat faced..

I actually had two of them identical with the exception of the other had pink ivory ring work..

Whitey made them for me when I was 18 along with a fancy steel jointed sneaky pete.. His cues play real good to me..

Best break cue I ever had. Wish I could get the one back..

Bacote is a wood that looks amazing in some cases to me. Other times I think it's kind of blah.

I have a cocobolo and curly maple Hurricane jump/break cue and it breaks better than any of the others i've tried. I worked part time with Whitey in his shop to learn a little about cue making and I made my cue in his shop. Whitey is a great guy and his cues aren't real fancy, but they play very well.

BEM,

While common and perhaps "played out" considering the list of options given...BEM is still fabulous.

I gotta say though,I don't know all of the woods on sight....so I can't vote em out,...But I know a few and I can vote BEM in :).
I love the look.

Best Looking Woods

Camatillo Rose Wood (sometimes called Mexican Kingwood) and then
the very rare Cochinchin. I also have about 8 or 9 other rosewoods, including
prized old growth swirled Brazilian, I use in cues. Here is a pic of a Camatillo handled cue I recently made. My web site shows over 70 species of "cue" woods.

Personally, I like Great Basin Bristlecone Pine. There's nothing like finding a tree older than Jesus, chopping it down and making a pool cue out of it which I will inevitably complain about after each miss.

Hard to say. I like red woods.

Snakewood is of course beautiful, but it's not as stable as I'd like it for a cue.

On place two follow figured Bubinga and Amboyna burl. I chose Pomelle Bubinga for my cue, since it's not as common in germany - people seem to use it for knifes, but not for cues ;-)

Detlev
