Best Moves for a Hustler To Use

Not real common but sometimes I would find myself in the right place in the sixties or seventies and loudly proclaim nobody in the place could beat me, I beat Wally Mosconi! It was funny when people tried to correct me. Sometimes if the game obviously wasn't going to work I'd "acknowledge" that Wally was Willie's third cousin twice removed and didn't play nearly as well as Willie!

A serious question for everyone: Have you been busted by a cell phone? For all of the claims I don't see it happening. Perhaps the hottest gambling hall in the US at the time, I saw three youngsters come in, spend three days, and leave with about ten grand in tournament and gambling winnings. If anybody busted them they didn't say anything. Playing style was the big giveaway to me. I didn't confirm who they were, they weren't skinning a close friend of mine and it was an open tournament. I suppose that is the real thing, I never cared who I was playing but what I was playing. What speed could they put on the table that night?

The real issue is that you can be making all of these "clever" hustler moves and then one tiny thing will undo your whole act. My favorite target was small(er) time hustlers. The fun part was that they would insist on me winning until the money got right. I would be on the stall too but I would still be playing on their money before long. Then when the bet got to twenty a game, sometimes fifty, very rarely a hundred, the stall was off. I would see the tiny shifts in their behavior and know that I was fixing to see their best game. Generally I still had enough in reserve to keep on winning but if not I would let them win some of their own money back then quit. No way for the hustler to win so he had been hustling himself the whole time!

One of the funniest guys was truly obnoxious thinking I was drunker than I was so I did something a little different. He was going for fifty a game so I drug things out until I had over a hundred of his money when we raised the bet to fifty. I noticed that slight change in demeanor I was watching for. Before breaking I walked over and clapped him on the shoulder, "I have had too much to drink, you have had too much to drink,(despite the fact he wasn't drinking) let's finish this another night." Before he could think how to respond I made a well planned step out a nearby door and was gone! I figured I could beat him but I also figured it would gall him more to give away over a hundred in seventies dollars then have his fish slip the hook. Besides, I got many a laugh out of that deal, worth more than the hundred or two more I might have won.

Best hustler move these days is when you see a guy and girl together and the guy has a pool glove. Go hit on the chick. When he gets pissed tell him with that glove he’s wearing you thought she was just his friend. That oughtta get you a game!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Everyone lies in pool about not playing.

“Now and then you know”

“I haven’t hit a ball in a month”

All the standard BS lines, I used them too and noticed that they never worked. This was back in 91-92 when I had been playing long enough I could play a bit and finding easy action was getting difficult. I needed easy action because I was on the short stack. So I’d lie about not playing-and it didn’t work.

So one day someone asked me to play, I tried a new response which would only work with someone who didn’t know me. But it did open the door to getting weight from the jump.

“I’d really like to play you, but I’m just a beginner trying to get better, how can we play?”

I started getting weight from people I didn’t even need it from with that line of BS. Occasionally I’d make a bad game and wouldn’t get enough weight. But more often than not that move worked great. “I’m just a beginner trying to get better” it’s amazing how people fell for that.

I suppose it’s because they never heard it. Everyone heard “I haven’t played in 6 months” so that never works.

This was back in the days when you could play 4 different guys a day in a new town. And the internet didn’t knock action.

The power of words can be amazing sometimes. New material is more effective.

Fatboy<<——hasn’t played in 5 years & im not looking for a game. So it really is true this time. Scouts honor😂 RIP Pots & Pans

I was in San Angelo Tx going to the NCO Academy at the base there and when I went to the pool hall..Giz and Hums I think it was called some local players swore I was Larry Nevel and I could not get a game with anybody without me giving up some weight. I was at best a B player. I played like I always did but all these jokers swore I was laying down.Crazy!

Next week I am going to the pool hall wearing a Covid mask,,,,,a full mask like the Masked Marvel, maybe a shield also.
I'm going to shoot trick shots at 100 MPH and dog it,,,,,see what happens, just for fun.
I'll be in full Iguana mode,,change my appearance, well see.

Get a cue with some screw on tips and make a big deal out of changing the tip before fishing for some action. The trick would be to put a good tip on the screw on tip part, might take some extra work but it might get a few bites.

Have a crooked beater cue and make a big deal rolling it and ask if anybody knows how to fix a bent cue. I don't think a warped cue is really a disadvantage. I did this a while back, took a cue off the wall and rolled it on the table, the tip was 3/4" from touching on one side. I kind of pushed the tip down like I was trying to straighten it, rolled it again and "gave up." He had a cue of his own and his friends conveniently had all the house cues with decent tips. I got the slip on tip and just chalked the hell out of it until it no longer looked like pea gravel. I was not betting that night and was ready to go home but my quarters came up on the rail. I did get the guy to flash a little stack of singles after seeing me fuss with the bent cue. I played him one game, beat him but let him have the table back. I made sure to get "lucky" several times in case I wanted to go back. No use killing future action by destroying a guy in front of his friends, keep that level incognito!

"Best Moves for a Hustler To Use"...... walk into a pool room looking like PeeWee Herman

People are more risk averse these days in general. They are fearful of more things than ever, illnesses, flat tires, pollution, gambling the list goes on. It’s a social trend not limited to gambling.

Hustling or hiding your identity is over. Cheating is possible but that a con game and there’s a difference between hustling and conning someone. Big difference.

Milk drinkers have over taken the world and the gamblers are getting old and dying off. I gamble all the time with old men. I’m 55 and the young guy in the room.

Even poker players are less gamblers. They are using solvers to solve poker to take the gamble out of it. So while they are engaging in gambling they are doing so in a non-gambling mindset with a “solved” solution for any given poker hand to the best of their ability.

People won’t flip a coin for $100 even money.

The casinos still get action, that’s not really gambling. It’s a “experience” for drunk people or addicted degens who can’t help themselves

Fatboy<———just say “no” to milk drinkers….

I think FanDuel, Draft Kings, and MGM would disagree.

I think FanDuel, Draft Kings, and MGM would disagree.
You are correct. They would. However I think if they existed 30 years ago they would have 50% more customers than they do now.

The % of people who gamble is dropping.

But the absolute number of people who are gambling is a higher number as the population is expanding.

I know a good bit about the gaming biz and the above statements are purely speculative on my part. Based on my experience. There’s less “street” gambling now. And who says “I’ll bet you $5 on that” anymore. It’s rare.

Organized gambling is doing well, you absolutely right.

Great post on your part.

Best
