Best Moves for a Hustler To Use

You are correct. They would. However I think if they existed 30 years ago they would have 50% more customers than they do now.

The % of people who gamble is dropping.

But the absolute number of people who are gambling is a higher number as the population is expanding.

I know a good bit about the gaming biz and the above statements are purely speculative on my part. Based on my experience. There’s less “street” gambling now. And who says “I’ll bet you $5 on that” anymore. It’s rare.

Organized gambling is doing well, you absolutely right.

Great post on your part.

I think you are right for what's it's worth. It seems incredible today the things that people bet on in the past (anything to do with Titantic Thompson, etc). Either people are better informed now or more risk adverse with strangers. Or things were really boring in the past and people had nothing better to do than wager on a stranger's ability to do silly things.

I think the change in behavior is related to being more informed ergo risk averse. It’s social trait caused by information.

Dumb people bet cause they don’t know better.

Informed people are “advantage” players.

Sports handicapping is a “advantage” dream as they think they have a edge. So that action exists.

But the “street” gambler dumb guys got woke up by information.

That’s s cultural shift. We woke up the dummies so what they bet on changed. And some are wise enough not to bet now. Thus the risk adverse thing. It’s circular all road go towards “information” waking up dummies

I can’t stand it!!!

Tails for $5

I’ll trust who ever will flip

The information society seems to have grown a significant decorative component. The decoration society.

"Best Moves for a Hustler To Use"...... walk into a pool room looking like PeeWee Herman

Justin Bergman looks like Pee Wee Herman...but it doesn't work for him. (edit) Bottom line: Any hustle you can dream up has already been done.

I was in San Angelo Tx going to the NCO Academy at the base there and when I went to the pool hall..Giz and Hums I think it was called some local players swore I was Larry Nevel and I could not get a game with anybody without me giving up some weight. I was at best a B player. I played like I always did but all these jokers swore I was laying down.Crazy!
Chuck
Sorry to hear you had to spend time in San Angelo.

My best hustling story (not about me - I tried to hustle once when I was younger...and made a little money...but I just felt bad about it.). There is a player right now with a recognizable name who is a points leader on one of the pro (semi-pro?) tours. I'm not going to name it, or him. But, in the 90s - I was working at our local pool room (Snookers in Antioch, TN) shortly before joining the AF. Part of that involved walking around to all of the tables and cleaning up, etc as people were playing. I saw this guy hanging out with a big group of guys who worked at a local factory. They all came in every night, drank a ton of beers, and gambled like crazy. None could run 3 balls but they stayed within their group. He infiltrated the group, as his cousin was one of them (found out later) and snuck him in to bust everyone because these guys made good money and WOULD gamble amongst themselves. I didn't know that additional information at first, but I recognized he was new to that group, and he was using house cues...and a wonky bridge, wouldn't run over 2 balls without missing (but leaving it safe), drinking tons of beers and having a grand old time. I didn't notice he was anything out of the ordinary. This went on for about 4 days and I think they figured out they couldn't beat him, so he was done. No harm no foul. Well, I come in to work one night and nobody is there but him. He has a table, and now using a beautiful Schon cue..and practicing - running out from everywhere. A friend and I took him down to a weekly bar table tournament that paid good, and he won it handily. He asked my friend (who was a great player but not his speed) for a spot and I told my friend not to play him. He got a little upset, but I told him I wasn't going to let him hustle my friend, and he understood. He went on his way and life went on. Until a few years ago when I saw him on YOUTUBE on this tour...and immediately recognized him. A great player - and then he was just a kid and played great...going around the country gambling/playing. I know he had plenty of money and I was very envious of him (because I recognized early on that if I wanted anything in life I was going to have to get it the hard way).

These were my 2 go-to moves back in my early 20s....
For decent competition, I'd play a tournament without my contacts in and change nothing else. Then play cash games with the contacts in.
If targeting league player level guys who are maybe semi serious about the game but not really good, I loved playing up the dumb jock angle. I would play bad position all the time, wrong side myself, choose stupid patterns, and generally favor a fancy draw over a stop shot. It was amazing to me how easy it was for ppl to believe that I was just a dumb player with a stroke who beat them by getting lucky.

It also seems to me that while people remain willing to gamble on the abilities of sports stars and teams, they are getting much less willing to gamble on their own abilities. Getting a $20 bet on whatever pro game is on the TV in the bars I go to is pretty easy, but getting the same bet on a game of 8-ball (or even a short race) is next to impossible. And it's not becasue I am a world beater, either. Geez, some days I'm just slightly above a banger. lol

go where there are gamblers and you can get good and bad action. go where there are nerds and expect to not get a bet.

its always been that way. except today we have more so called nerds that play video games and dont gamble.

Well I got smoked last night for $100. Then locked in a $500min 10 ball match for April and got off a few guys radars…. I’ll give you guys the link if it happens. April gives me time to practice.👍

It's funny how so many people talk about the gambling "stigma" attached to pool. Considering the poker boom and gambling ads during the Super Bowl, I don't think the stigma is that strong.
Think about it!! This entire thread explains the stigma about gambling attached to pool!!

Hustling is purposely hiding true playing skills to sucker people into gambling on pool.

And I am not aware of stories of fistfights because someone at DraftKings purposely hustled a gambler.

You make good points. But. This isnt always true D. In my statement above it was totally unintentional. The guy I was playing is probably still a little better than I am(I’ve known him for years) and I thought the place was open another hour. So no time to catch him. It just works out how it works out sometimes. Some people still like putting it up!

No one has mentioned Stephen Potter's "Gamesmanship". It covers the gentler methods of gaining an unfair advantage. Byrne discusses some of Potter's techniques for cue sports in one of his books, but you can get the original for about $6 delivered to your door.

all person to person games you gamble at are subject to some degree of hustling on both sides and all is fair. cheating is not.

why do i have to play my best at all times. i want to win the money and keep my opponent around. whats wrong with that.
he can quit if he wants.
you had better learn that if you are going to be a gambler or gamble. its totally stupid to show your full speed if better than the guy as he just quits immediately.

Con is gaining the “confidence” that he can beat you when he can’t. That’s running a con game.

A hustle is a persuasion of sorts, a form of a con but with class and finesse. Hustlers never refer to their customers as “suckers” as they can be “friends”. Hustlers are gentlemen at all times.

You can sheer a sheep many times yet only skin it once. The con man skins his “sucker”. That’s not gentlemanly, and nothing to be proud of.

Hustlers are gentlemen.

Cons are crooks. Shameful.

Kindest regards,

Fatboy, you certainly have a wonderful way with words!

It’s all done.

First time I saw a camera on a phone in a picture. My first thought was “pool hustling is dead” sadly I was right.

Sucks
Fatboy 😕
Can’t hustle pool like it was in 60s, 70s,80s, because communication is instant. Hustler showed up in poolroom and no one knew who they were. Now everyone knows due to picture, internet info, etc. Bygone era.
