I did not know about Valley Billiards and will check it out next time I am in Dayton (I was there 9 times in the past year).
Another suggestion in Dayton would be Airway Billiards on Needmore Road. IMO, some of the tables are in so-so condition. The side tables have old style felt, which I haven’t seen in a pool room in ages. The tables are older Diamond and Gold Crowns, some of which need some work. The tables are a mix of 7’, 8’, and 9’. The good part is that they often have tournaments and some of the players are pretty good. Monday nights is a $5 9-ball tournament. Last time I was there, Alex Olinger and Billy Thorpe were playing. I didn’t know who they were at the time, but it didn’t take a genius to realize they are special players. Saturday afternoon tournaments change each week 1P, banks, etc. I believe there is an ‘A’ player 1P tournament during the week and I am sure there are other opportunities to play. The people who participate are really friendly. It is a smaller cozy room that I have gotten to like a lot. I have not had reason to feel unsafe. It is just off I-75 in an older, commercial section of town.
If you only have a limited time in the area, I agree with Brent. Michael’s in Fairfield is a great pool room and worth the drive from Columbus or Dayton. It is not far off the interchange of I-75 and I-275 just north of Cincinnati. In the main section of the room, the tables are older Diamonds in top condition. I haven’t been there many times, but the pockets I played were 4.5”, Simonis cloth, and the rails were just right. Even the tables at the far end of the room were in great condition. Enough room around the tables. Good food, friendly staff. They also have a 3C and a 10’ Diamond. One of the better pool rooms I have visited recently. When I grew up in Dayton, we used to think Cincinnati was the other side of the world. When I lived in NJ, my daily commute was longer than that. Michael’s is in a shopping center and should be as safe as any place.
